Don't let hurricane Irene ruin your coins!

So hurricane Irene looks she will come up the east coast to try to spoil the fun for people! I'm all prepared to store in my coins in a waterproof/fireproof safe! Hope everyone is able to not have ANY coins destroyed, and they have a place to store them image

From someone who went through Katrina. There are far more important things to worry about than your coins if it really comes down to it.
This did not happen to me but it did happen to others.
The bank safety deposit boxes flooded and filled up with water, leaving the coins sitting in water for weeks.
Take them with you they are not safe in the safety deposit box when a hurricane is comming,

I think New Orleans is a unique place being near the coast and below sea level. Most SDB in other areas would not have that threat. I would not carry valuables around with me unless there was a real significant threat of total destruction.

If you live right along the coast you might have an issue but anything inland there is nothing to worry about

COINS would be the LEAST of my concerns. They're made of metal and can survive quite a bit. Plus they're small and portable and easy to carry when you're fleeing.

It's our home and pets I'd be most worried about. We have a mobile home and live near the water. Even a Cat 1 storm would be a party-pooper for us. Plus we have seven cats, three dogs, and a pony. How to get all of them rounded up and transported (with no horse trailer, I should add) is a nightmare I would rather not think about.

Fortunately this area has not had a direct hit since 1898, and the last passing storm to do much serious damage was Dora in 1964 or thereabouts. Some say that means "we're due". But I am crossing fingers.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

That's no doubt what Upstate South Carolina thought when Hugo was coming. We had trees down even up in the NC mountains, hundreds of miles inland and away. Fortunately Hugos and Katrinas are not common.

In Texas we might be throwing a party for her. Especially if the winds weakened and hit sparsely populated coastline as a Cat 1 or tropical storm.

I wish you well with all those animals. If you are in the pathway and are in an area that could flood 2 feet or more it might not be a bad idea to look for a trailer now.

New Yorkers beware. If Irene continues on its projected path, there may be serious flooding below Canal Street in Manhattan. The last time this happened was I believe in 1828, when lower Manhattan was 10 feet underwater due to the wind whipped storm surge.

Your thinking appears to be quite shallow. Some of us can do both---protect their collection now and then help their family and neighbors during and after the hurricane. Also, some collections here represent a significant part of the family's assets and may be needed to be sold to raise money to repair or rebuild their homes.

This is a coin forum, so it's not much of a suprise that he posted about protecting coins from a hurricane. Maybe on the neighbors forum he posted about protecting your neighbors from a hurricane.

I think my coins are save enough, so please aim it at San Antonio before we blow away. The drying up is already well on it's way with 100+ degrees day after day.

No, just a 16 year old with a keyboard.

Not trying to take shots at anyone, sorry, just my initial feeling from the OP.
