Has this PCGS holder been tampered with?

Last week, I posted a question about a coin I won in the Heritage Chicago Auction. LINK, wondering why I was able to be the high bidder.

I received the coin today, and in examining it saw some things about the holder that got me wondering. Does PCGS ever ship holders with what looks like glue on the inside, or has this holder been tampered with? It's much clearer in hand, but look closely near the words HALF DOLLAR.

Also note the scratch on the left side of the holograph. All this "stuff" is on the inside of the holder, and shows up much better (including other stuff that doesn't show in the Heritage photo) when held up to a lamp with magnification.

The coin in question was this one LINK

edited to add: I've just never seen a PCGS holder with damage (or whatever it is) on the INSIDE.

I think you're just paranoid (sorry, not trying to be mean but I can't think of a better word image) Looks like normal slab damage and possibly the insert is a little loose?

I see no real problem with the holder.

Ditto - I don't see anything unusual here.

quite typical to see brutalized gaskets.

an occaisional scratched hologram? could happen.

If you worry it's been tampered with, the thing to check are the edges.

if they are clean, then it is clean.

Nothing wrong with that slab other than a little wear and tear. The soft ring frequently gets scraped and distorted when the coin is inserted so this is not unusual. If the coin in the slab is problem free, authentic, and has the same grade as shown on the label, you can be fairly certain that this slab is untampered with. Of course this advice doesn't help if you don't know how to grade or authenticate coins.

Perry, the soft ring is not scraped or distorted. But there is what looks like crazy glue, with tiny bubbles in it, smeared way outside the ring. I have seen a number of PCGS holders, but none messy like this, so was not even aware that they used glue inside the holder.

And I do know how to grade, I started collecting in 1959, the same year David Hall did, but I was 15, and he was 12. By today's commercial standards, it's a Fine12, but back when I started collecting, I'd have thought of it as a VG.

I think I'll change the title of this thread, to ask a more pointed question, because the coin does look authentic.

PCGS doesn't use glue inside or outside their slab. It appears the soft inner ring is probably squashed against the insider of the shell giving that visual effect.
