image

why does everything I own have a bit of green innit? this is due a soak I guess too.

not sure what this token is. toluca is mexico, festival for dedication of the president? but there's a medical symbol on the obverse.

it's weird that so many of the letters are backwards.

VERY cool piece. The mispunched lettering and crudeness is probably not uncommon for the place and time.

As you probably guessed, the Presidente they dedicated their festival to was Porfirio Díaz.

The caduceus is not just a medical symbol. In fact, as that Wikipedia article just taught me (thanks, Wikipedia), it is apparently used as such in error. (It's got two snakes, whereas the Rod of Asclepius, the correct symbol, has only one- and no wings, I guess.)

What the caduceus means in this context is an interesting enigma we'll just have to get to the bottom of, won't we? image

lol, of I had that por firio diez image I was focusing more on toluca and the date. Lots of landmark train activity in the area at the time.

I dont see anything about politically signifigant stuff going on in 1897...

so this is some sort of festival celebrating commerce in toluca (in conjunction with the new travel capabilities of the day) dedicated to the president image

thanks LM!! both in combination make sense!
