Have you noticed every dealer claims.....

Have you noticed how almost every dealer claims to pay the highest prices paid for xxxx or No one will pay you more for xxxx?

I am waiting for the honest dealer to post on there website we pay less than Graysheet bid on all items or We buy only from people willing to take 50% of the auction price.

This is not a bash on dealers I just think its funny how 95% claim no one will pay you more or to pay the highest prices.

I know a few dealers who this is true for such as Rick Snow pays by far the most for quality Indian Head cents but it seems like for most this is just a tag line.

Anyone notice this as well?

The same dealers, when selling certified coins, often claim the coin is severely under-graded and a bargain at twice the price.

Instead of "We paid the highest prices!", how about "We pay almost the highest prices, but we just won't tell you to whom we sell because they pay even higher!" ? image

    I have an idea...

Open up a coin store and advertise you don't pay the highest prices and see how long you stay in business!

not bashing anyone just pointing out the facts that are often overlooked.

I agree people won't offer coins to someone who says were pay next to nothing for your coins but it obvously not true to say we pay the higest prices when you offer 50% of what i coin would sell for at auction.

I don't claim to pay the highest prices; I just attempt to treat all my clients (those who sell to me and those who buy from me) with respect and honesty. If we can make a deal beneficial to all then that is great.

There's a dealer in my area who advertises on the radio quite a bit. He says something along the lines of, "I don't claim to pay the highest prices, but I will be fair and pay you as much as I can."

General rule of thumb: true expert dealers pay the most for coins because they know exactly how much they can get out of them, and where to sell them. They also have great confidence in their own ability to grade coins in their area of specialization. They can attribute varieties at a glance. These dealers can work on a 10% margin because they are at the top of the game. There are not many of them around.

Dealers who pay "half sheet" for everything do so to cover their butts- because they don't know how to grade, and they have no specialized knowledge. They need to buy things "way cheap" to cover up their numerous grading and pricing mistakes. The typical brick & mortar guy in your home town antique mall with a case full of overgraded, cleaned junk comes to mind. Don't get insulted. These guys are what they are.

Yes, that is what it is all about. RESPECT and HONESTY. I think if we all treated everyone as we would want to be treated, and, perhaps, understood what it would be like to walk in another's shoes, we wouldn't have so many threads bashing either dealers or collectors. Sadly, there are many on both sides who are not mature enough or wise enough to fully comprehend the other's position. It is just easier to sit behind the keyboard and bash away. Respect and honesty can only enhance the appreciation and enjoyment of this wonderful hobby.

Why would you sell to a dealer if you are in the know? (Unless you have a $100000.00 coin that Trade Dollar likes.)

Otherwise, get it graded and auction it.

Even the cash for gold outfits claim to pay "the highest prices in the industry" while giving a lowball price.

This is true in ANY type of buy/sell enviroment. When we moved, we sold pretty much everything and bought new for the new house. Furniture shopping was INTERESTING. Every single place said the same thing: "we have the lowest price"

I work at a big, mean, nasty, retailer and we same the same thing and so does out competition.

It's just the way it is.

However when it's visibly proven to be untrue, doesnt this conflict with consumer protection/fraud laws?

I noticed it right from the start.
IMO, it diminishes the credibility and image of every one of 'em who claims to do so.
    When in doubt, don't.

I do not know of a single dealer that I buy from that makes such a promise. Maybe you should look elsewhere. As far as I am concerned, this is a great marker for who not to waste your time with. Thanks to these dealers for pointing theirselves out to me, so that I can move elsewhere. Saves us all a lot of time.

We have a "Diamond Exchange" at 8th and Walnut Street.; part of Jeweler's Row. Inside the building is a one floor market where 20 dealers all have their own space. Every dealer has the obligatory "lowest diamond prices' and "paying highest for gold" signs. I think they even had them all printed at the same place. You walk in and you get a feel for how the Christians must have felt when they were introduced to the lions.

Are these the same dealers that also have "The World's Greatest Clam Chowder"??

It is all marketing to pick up the phone or walk in the door, but regardless of the claim one should stand behind it the best they can.

I'll pay 90% of face value for all US currency & coins. example send me a 1000.00 dollar bag of quarters and I'll send you a money order for 900.00 dollars. or 5 -100 dollar bills you get 450.00 money order. no deal to small or big just send the money first. hey if it's silver I'll give you 100% face value lol. always paying top dollar. we pay a little bit more and sell for a little bit less.

doesn't matter what widget you are trying to buy/sell , it's part of the advertising game/ business jmho
