RE: Die chips

I read a recent thread about die chips and they mostly were in the numbers. Are they located anywhere else and what is the difference between a die chip and a cud?

The difference between a die chip and a die cud is simply size. The reason that die chips and cuds are common around numbers and letters is becase those areas are the easiest places for a chip or cud to start. As the die wears down the chip or cud can grow larger.

Of course artarians explanation is much better than mine and more correct. I guess my brain is starting to fall asleep before the rest of my body.

Cuds are chips from the rim inward and have to include the rim.

Chips can be die breaks anywhere in the coin away from the RIM.

Die breaks ( chips) can be found in the numbers of the date. mint mark being filled, Letters on LIBERTY the MOTTO. on the reverse in the memorial the letters on the reverse. filling letters there too. I started to write a book on them cause i found them interesting. starting wtih a nutjob idea and some free time saying if i find 150 or 200 different types ill be amazed and now the total is over 1,000. Some other variations go from the design to the letters on the reverse ( to AMERICA or UNITED ) which are dramatic and bring interest. Tiny field chip specks or minor letter fills are not so hot on the resale but still interesting . I try to do them all. Value ( cause i know someone will ask) really doesnt add much to it. Its like alot of things the rarity of the coin, the coolness factor. BIE cents ( a chip filled between B and E in LIBERTY) are hotter than lets say a 1951 filled D. I got alot of donations from another site for the book and i still plucked about 600 by myself from rolls. I like to think minor ones are worth 25 cents over face, cooler ones more.

Some people here will say dont waste your time, they arent worth anything, are an eye sore to a coin. But how that might be right in some respects to some people I find them interesting worth pursuing.

If you have interest I say go for it.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I have found die chips, cuds and some pretty elaborate die cracks. They interest me so I have started an album of these from the dime rolls I search.image

You should try cents. Bigger coin nice chips and cracks. Wont make you millions but are easier to spot than on dimes. I should post a few of my favorites this week so you can see what i mean.

Die chips are basically just a die that has a piece chipped out which will leave a raised area on the coins struck from the die.

A cud is a die break which MUST involve the rim. I see the term "cud" misused all the time to describe a die chip or break that doesn't involve the rim.

I have shared this silly nickel a few too many times on this forum since I got in the Heritage ANA Auction but here it is again...

Die Chip under 'D' in UNITED and Die Polish under "FIVE CENTS". I got a 2 for 1 deal. image
