I just purchased a bunch of silver for when the SHTF come Monday...and there were a few nicer Barber Dimes in the group that I may pull aside as better than melt. Problem is (if this is a problem) that they all have crud on the high points from being stored in the bag together for so many years.

I've overcome the temptation to scrape it off with a fingernail, but I wonder if it makes the coins super-original-desirable, or is too big a distraction to be a good thing? What'cha' think?

    Maybe not to a collector, but it would be extremely difficult to get anything more than melt for them.

    Acetone on a Q-tip should do the trick. Or submerge the coin in acetone and flick the stuff off with a toothpick.

    I'd scrape the cheeks and rims with a fingernail. I'd save the 1911
