PCGS, Auction Mis-Labeled Coin, Just Realized it Three Years Later

I was re-imaging my set of MS-64FBL Franklins and was trying to figure out why I had two 1962 coins. I'm actually 1100 miles from my collection (on a trip) and was working on the images, and I was trying to figure out what happened. Only part of the slab serial number was in the shot, and it was for a '63-D. Went back in my old e-mails, found the winning auction, and looked up the coin. You can see it here.

Obviously this was a case of me buying the slab and not the coin (bad me, bad), as the coin is clearly a 1962, while the slab and auction say it's 1963-D.

Is there any sort of remedy for this? I mean, at the very least, will PCGS re-slab it for free, do you think?

I actually just checked the rough value (I use the median price for the last 2 years the coin's come up on Heritage) ... and the 1963-D is around $40 while 1962 is around $200 (for MS-64FBL). I paid $21+8.

Just send it to us as a Mechanical Error. Check the OTHER box and write it in.

We will reholder it - same grade, correct year - for no charge. You only pay the roundtrip shipping.

Make sure you complete the submission form with all your coin information including value.

Do mechanical error submissions get checked for grade before being returned? Not that I have any reason to expect a problem with this coin, but I can imagine other scenarios.

But, but, what if it's the wrong coin in the wrong holder! Grade might be really different. Perhaps it's
a MS62FBL in a MS64FBL holder. I think it needs to be looked at, not just reholdered.

Yeah, I was actually wondering too, thinking it probably should be re-graded just in case. You know, in case it's an MS-65FBL.

Or, I suppose, in case it's -63FBL. Or -64 no-FBL (though looking at the photo I took, I think it would pass even NGC's FBL requirements).

I'm going to go with a yes, well kinda. The last 'mechanical error' we sent in went in as an MS-60 and came out as a PF-58...

I'm surprised that PCGS doesn't at least pay for return shipping since it was their mistake after all.

Doesn't make much sense to have the submitter pay shipping both ways. The company making the mistake should be pay for correcting their own mistake, and that should include shipping fees both ways.

Ditto.

But, paying the shipping might just be worth it since a 62P in MS64FBL is just a wee bit more expensive than a 63D in MS64FBL.

IMO, the coin isn't an MS65.

I would keep it as it is with the error. Its cooler like that.

Heres a story about not buying the coin-

At a recent show I saw a really nice mercury dime in a 2x2 labeled as 1945 P. It had beautiful luster and I figured oh what the heck Ill look for fun to see if its a FSB.
I quickly flip the coin over and I see the bands are as split as can possibly be! I ask how much- and am told $10. I quickly purchase my newest cherrypick thinking of the score I just made.

I place the coin in my bag and when I get home, I take it out to look at my future "you suck" coin. The bands are as crisp and split as I thought.
Strangely, something attracts me to the date. I look it over and laugh. It was a 1942.

That taught me a lesson

Sometimes the error is not PCGS's but the submitter.

The form could have been filled out wrong,

and PCGS did not correct it.

Same here... The coin is really an 09 vdb Lincoln cent MS64RB, but was labeled as an 09.
I bought the holder, not the coin.
