Opinions on this coin based only on the obverse

There is a good reason I am posted just the obverse, I will share it later.

What is your opinion based on what you see?

    I'm guessing it's a cast fake.

Another possibility is that it has been in a fire. Soot particles are acidic and can damage coin surfaces.

It may be afake but I see another scenario.

How about a coin that has been way overdipped and then retoned?

Would this be something like a half-asked opinion ?

Did the counterfeiter use the Barber reverse?

From the pic it looks "grainy" and the wear is inconsistent, but as stated though it is a fake.

Is it a novelty two headed coin?

Surfaces have that porous look to them. Toning looks odd for what appears to be a VF-XFish coin. That's the kind of toning I would expect on a common date unc coin, not a circ.

The shape of Liberty's features show that it's a quarter. The other denominations all have their own distinctive Miss Liberty.

When I saw the "1870" date on that it just looked wrong for some reason. I've seen enough business strike 1870 quarters and my gut feel says it's too big.
It looks too tall and squarish. When looking at the date digits on counterfeits the inside ovals are often cruder and rounder than what the mint used.

  • Too me the date is off,

    The coin looks wrong but,

The uneven strike, it could very well fool many.

This is good enough to fool many, did it fool you?

an 1870 P in this grade is $200.

    It just looks wrong.

Without seeing it in hand I would vote fake.

The dentils are a mess, malformed and with casting pits in them.
