What would a reasonable purchase price be for a 1942/1-D PCGS 65FB?

Around $5,000?
Read it in 2001 Red Book.

That coin is a substantial amount of money. If you need to ask about this, you may want to rethink your purchase. This is shared as a protective comment, not a negative one. You will find the Merc collectors here stick together as well as any collecting group.

PCGS has a listing of Mercury retail values that tends to run high, but it will get you in the ballpark. Are you considering the purchase of this coin or just curious?

10K-15K, maybe more depending on the eye appeal.

The Certified Coin Dealer, lists it at $12,650.00
Coin Universe, lists it at $22,500.00
Quite a spread between the two?

Old bluesheet is $12.500, PCGS Daily Retail Guide is 22,500 and an old greysheet is 13,500 bid, 15,000 ask. Good luck

Check on all the online auctions you can and that would be the most accurate up-to-date prices realized.
I wouldnt take the PCGS price as accurate.

I'm new at this message board, and I was hoping to get an idea from you active collectors and board members. It's difficult to purchase a coin like this without a second opinion. I trust you fellows know the Mercury market well enough to ask a few questions.

Speaking of the 42/1,I may have screwed up when I turned down a 42/1 P at a coin show a couple years ago.It was raw so I shyed away.I wished I,d known then what I know now about this coin.I could have authenticated it from diagnostics I learned afterwards.I could have maybe snagged a nice AU-MS example for $380.

I've been collecting Merc's since I was a kid with a paper route.
It's still in my blood, but more serious. The only way I buy now
is if they are in a PCGS holder. This is the best way to have half a
chance in making a purchasing decision. It sort of takes out most the
risk, however I have had my doubts with some purchases.
