As far as I know, this isa only the second example of a 1973-S Ike on a copper-nickel planchet that's been found! Some fella back east found one in a Blue Pack, which NGC Graded and then posted a story about the coin in the September 29th, 2008 Coin World (Link for those that have Access) which was the same issue that my Prototype IKE was reported in.

NGC has a "From the Grading Room" piece on the first one found which graded MS67. Mine graded at a lowly AU58 but what the heck! It's got more history than that other one! I mean, how many folks actually passed this one over??

Since that 2008 CW article, I concentrating heavily on buying Sealed Shipping Envelope 5 packs of Blue 1973 IKE's looking for one of these. I spent a lot of money and spent a lot of time looking for one.

Little did I know that all I had to do was go down to my local bank and ASK! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    Lee.

    You Da Man.

Great pickup and it is nice to see your efforts in searching for Ikes rewarded.

Any idea as to what the value of this error would be?

BTW, it weighed in at exactly 22.7 grams by my scale. 40% Silver Clad Planchets are 24.6 grams although some come in a bit lighter. I have one which weighs in at 23.1 grams.

The linked NGC article quoted 5 figures by David Camire and the owner, John Wrublewski, stated he had offers for the MS67. I have no idea what those offers might have been.

The online edition of Mint Error News shows prices for off-metal IKEs in the $2500 range but they are for business strikes minted on 40% Silver Planchets.

I need to get down to the bank and put in another order. Say..........for a 1971-S Type 1 Proof? I mean........Ya never know! image

    GrandAm image >>

    Yes.

I went down to the bank a couple of weeks ago to drop off a $1,000 bag of Kennedy's (which yielded NOTHING!!) and casually asked the teller if she had any interesting coins for me.

(BTW, I always tell them to CALL ME when anything unusual comes in but they never do......<sigh> ).

At any rate, she says she has 3 of the older dollar coins and pulls out 3 Ike's. One was a 1973 and the other two were a 1971-D and a 1972 Type 3. No Type 2 or FEV but the 1973 caused me to ponder. Being mint set only coins it's not like I've never gotten a 1973 for really cheap but then the coin looked faily nice for a circulated piece so I decided to go ahead and give her a buck for it.

When I got home, I put it under the scope and then soiled myself. image

It is amazing what turns up occasionally at banks.
These are not as spectacular as Lee's but interesting never the list.
Many years ago I got 10 Ikes at a bank and 3 were unc 1971 S silver. But the condition of all 3 was far superior to any I ever saw in a blue envelope. I also eventually picked up Ike's for both mints for 1973.

This story is just amazing. I mean, I'd love to be able to afford a mega-coin, but would shelling out $200k for a coin be as satisfying as pulling something like this out of circulation after it bounced around for almost 30 years? I dunno...

I'm not sure how you slept for a week after finding something like that!

In the future when someone asks how to get a "You Suck", this is the thread they should be referred to. It's my favorite type of story... numismatic knowledge + diligence in searching = nice payoff.

    Congrats!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Awesome story - congrats!!

For the un-Ike-savvy, is there a precedent for this error? How many are out there? What do they command in the market?

Before even knowing the answers to these questions, I think your coin is very, very cool - the only coins I can think to compare it to would be 22-no-D cent, or 43 copper cent, where an error resulted in an otherwise official-looking issue, but where no such issue existed. Kinda makes one wonder how many other such errors might be out there that are impossible to detect.
