Coin Collectors /Car Collectors...Box of 20 / Garage of 10?

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,709 ✭✭✭✭✭
My wife and I are addicted to the UK TV show Top Gear. Simply the best hour of entertainment on TV today, In our opinion. She wants a Porsche.

Recently an episode mentioned a "garage of 10" , which I suppose means much the same as our vaunted Box of 20.

Collectors are collectors....and in addition to your box of 20, what would be in your "ideal" garage of 10?

Mine?

1972 Lotus Europa John Player Special
1964 Studebaker Avanti R2
1954 Kaiser Darrin 161
2003 Porsche Carrera (for the wife)
1947 VW Beetle
1948 Land Rover Pre production
Bugatti Veyron (why not dream?)
1933 Cadillac V 16 Dual Cowl
1966 Studebaker Daytona Sport Sedan (timberline turquoise, white interior, tint glass, AC, AM FM...searched for one for 35 years)
1901 Curved Dash Oldsmobile

My father has a beautiful red '57 t-bird. I love driving that.

I plan on buying one for myself. What kind of Porsche does she want? I have a 2011 Cayenne Turbo, it's beautiful.

I must admit, I no longer purchase cars over 1000 dollars. But I would like to own a vw bus of some sort someday.

I am of the belief that money is better spent elsewhere. And this is coming from a prior performance vw enthusiast. Yup, after I blew the motor in my twin turbo vr6 imageimageimage I gave up the spending on cars. But I do and have always lusted after a vw bus.

I'd start with the cars that were in my immediate family as purchased new and completely, remorsefully missed:
    1969 AMX
    1970 Dodge challenger 318 (mom's car)
    1969 GTO
    1973 240Z

    And add
    1962 Jaguar E-Type
1965 Dodge A-100 Forward Control truck

    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

    Dcarr,

I never knew El Camino's could look that good.

My dad had one when I was growing up, and sorta secretly I've always wanted one. Just something about them.

As for my 10, I have no idea. I have about three that I think I would want.

A 50's/60's truck, an El Camino, and a green Porsche.

    I would start with...

    1962 Corvette Fuelie
    1968 Camaro

    OK those are done.

Would get back the 1967 GTO Mustanggt sold several years ago....

Aside from that I would have to think hard. The problem is even getting out the first two above to keep them going enough is a challenge. Adding more would be that much more painful.

Oh, I have never sold a car in my life, if I keep going that way maybe I will get to 10!

    image

    Edit to add: Fuelie

Fun thread. I'm a proud poncho from the past, but there are others in the mix. No particular order after #3:
    (1) 1965 Pontiac Grand Prix. 421 tri-power, 4 speed, factory tach and guages, deluxe interior. Full power including vent windows. 8 lug Kelsey/Hayes wheels.
    (2) 1963 Corvette convertible (867). Factory air (860), four speed (M20), 340 HP engine (L76). Other options: A02, A31, C07, G91 (tall rear end means hi top end), J50, N34, N40, P48, T86, U69.
    (3) 1974 Firebird Formula SD 455, four speed, air conditioning, guage package (one of the best looking guage packages, IMHO - love the 270 degree tach with clock inserted at 3 o'clock position).
    (4) 1959 Lincoln. One of the most beautiful cars of the era.
    (5) 1969 Charger.
    (6) 1971 RR Corniche convertible.
    (7) 1962 Bullet Bird with M Code 390.
    (8) 1971 Buick Estate wagon (childhood, no real excuse for this selection).
    (9) 1937 Chrysler Airflow.
    (10) Any Duesenberg - not picky. One of the finest (technologically speaking) American cars ever produced. Ever.

Fun exercise. Shame the thread is not coin related and will likely be deleted.

Edited: Forgot the 8-lugs and misspelled Duesenberg.

The one and only car that I wish I had never sold was my 1970 Oldsmobile 442(W-30) edition.
I was the second owner when I purchased it in 1974 with only 32,000 miles. It had the 455 c.i. engine with posi rear end, ac, and believe it or not it had a bench seat with manual trans. It definately was a special order car.
Some of my other cars I purchased over the years were
    1972 Corvette 454
    1978 Corvette
    1982 ''
    1986 "
    1990 "
    1967 GTO
    1983 Mustang GT
and last but not least a triumph tr4-a forgot the year. I currently drive a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee(I guess I'm getting old)image

    Me too!

I almost had one back in 1996 when a friend from the car club was retiring and moving to Florida. He was selling his fully restored yellow Superbird and he was the orig owner.
Would have cost me $36K but it would have been a great buy since that was the bottom of the market. They had fetched $100K in 1990 and went back above that level in 2006.
Now they're probably in the $75K-$90K range for a fine specimen. I blinked on that yellow 440-4v 'Bird and some investor from New York bought it. Definitely the one that got away.

My dad had one when I was a kid growing up in Cleveland. We had a cabin(house that he built) in SW Pennsylvania along with 60 acres.
We used to fill the bed with hay and go on rides for the whole day. One day he went through a rough area in our of road rides and
he ripped out the gas tank, he had my older sister hold a gas can on the roof of that truck and a hose fed straight in so we could make it back to the cabin.........It was a blast.......
Makes me miss my Dad even moreimage

If I can find the picture I will post itimage
Thanks for bringing back some great memories!

I could live with Broadstruck's garage. I've owned a 302 Boss a Shelby and several Mach 1's but never at the same time. I urge any car guys and gals to attend theWoodward Dream Cruise at least once in your life. 30,000 unique cars and 1,000,000 spectators on one day. I'm sure most every car mentioned in this thread will be represented rolling down Woodward at 3 MPH. MJ

A FuN thread.....one thing I notice...here I am, a "specialist" I suppose you would say with coins, yet my garage of ten ranges from a curved dash olds to a veyron. So, I guess Im a 'type' collector in the design of that mythical garage of 10. Most of you folks come up with variations of gas munching tire burning fords.....a "series" collection, and a specialized one.

You see what I mean? series or type. it applies to both coins and cars

Hats off to those who have described their "Actual" garage of ten, and some very impressive motor collections there are here indeed.

Dan, Your taste is awesome. Nice vehicles one and all~

The Garage of 10 is an excellent concept. Here is mine. With the exception of the Gullwing and the Cobra, the rest are within my budget constraints. Obviously, most of them are cars of my youth.

    1. 1955 Gullwing Mercedes
    2. 1963 XKE Convertible
    3. 1974 Lotus Europa Twin Cam - JPS
    4. 1965 Corvette Stingray Coupe
    5. 1965 289 Shelby Cobra
    6. 1967 Austin Healey 3000
    7. 1963 Triumph TR-3B
    8. 1957 Thunderbird
    9. 1967 Morgan Plus Four
    10. 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster

I have owned versions of two of these cars and hope to own most of them at some point. Obviously, one at a time. I just bought, fixed and sold one of them this year.

MJ, how does one even look at 30,000 cars in one day??? The biggest car shows I've attended have put around 1000-1500 cars on the field. And that takes 1-2 days to fully take in.
I cannot even imagine 30,000 cars. When doing auction lot viewing I look at around 600-800 coins max in one day's viewing. If those cars are spaced 10 ft apart, that works out to
be 56.8 miles of cars to view. In an 8 hour day you'd have to be jogging at 7 mph (8-1/2 min miles) to cover them all....and no stopping! image
Well, if you looked back and forth across the aisle, you could drop down to a brisk walk....but still no stopping.

This is what my garage of "almost" 10 actually consisted of over the years:

1970 Challenger R/T rally red, 440-6 shaker hood
    1968 GTX convertible 4 speed
    1970 Coronet RT convertible automatic

The Dream Cruise goes down one stretch of road (I believe about 20 miles). Over one million spectators line the avenue to watch the cars roll by. It's literally a car parade. I believe it's the largest attended one day event in the US. Trust me, you would love it. I have an extra room.......MJ

    read below

The Woodward Dream Cruise event is a classic car event held annually on the third Saturday of August. The WDC Event spans much of Woodward Avenue from Pontiac through Ferndale in Oakland County, Michigan, all the way to the State Fair Grounds inside the Detroit city limits, just south of 8 Mile Road. "Woodward Dream Cruise" is a registered trademark of Woodward Dream Cruise, Inc.[1] An estimated one million spectators attended the 2009 Woodward Dream Cruise.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, drawing about 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars each year from around the globe. You can see muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles dating across several decades.[3] The majority of the cars on display are those that were available and prevalent during the 1950s, 60s and early 70s prior to the OPEC oil embargo, which led to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy regulations of 1975 and the proliferation of more fuel-efficient and less powerful automobiles. However, the Woodward Dream Cruise also welcomes vehicles of all models whose owners have either scrupulously maintained or customized their car to create a unique vehicle or statement.

During the post-war era, people would "cruise" in their cars along Woodward Avenue, from drive-in to drive-in, often looking for peers or friends who were also out for a drive, and perhaps seeking an opportunity for some street racing or at least a chance to "burn rubber" (or "light 'em up") in a quick getaway from a newly green traffic light.

Berkley's Custom Police Cruiser, complete with a 502-CID V8 and flames, donated by a group of residents for use in the Woodward Dream Cruise.
Nelson House, a plumber from Ferndale, initiated the idea for the cruise in 1994 to help raise money for a children's soccer field in his community

Organizers initially expected 30,000 or 40,000 people to come to the August 19, 1995 inaugural cruise on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak and Birmingham. About 250,000 actually showed up.[3]

It is now the largest single day classic car event in the world, and brings in over $56 million annually for the Metro Detroit economy.[4]

Each year, the celebration starts early in the week with these classic vehicles brought out onto the streets in preparation, and ancillary events are scheduled in the sponsoring communities of Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Berkley, Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, and Pontiac.

Thanks forf that info MJ. I did car cruises for about 10 yrs and never knew the Woodward Cruise was that huge....or long.

Very impressive. Giving 36,000 cars 10 hrs to drive by works out to 1 car per second. A 13-14 mph convoy.

My biggest dissapointment was in the early 80's...a painful lesson learned. I think I was about 28-29 years old and had my pick of $1,000 convertibles in San Jose. I had a 67 & 68 Camaro converts under cover on the side of the house but Money was tight, I had just bought the house. My neighbor in Los Gatos knew from what I drove that I liked old cars and he owned a 68 burgundy KR500 conv.----original owner. One friday night he comes to my door and asks me if I'd like to own the car....Holey batman! He needed $5,000------------NOW. I wasn't prepared and whiffed the deal, although if he could have waited til monday morning, no problemo. He couldn't wait, sold it that saturday to Ferrari of Los Gatos.
    Have a nice day

The guy across the street from our lot in elizabeth nj ( on battleship row as St George ave was called ) exported a LOT of camaro's, firebirds, etc to Sweden. He would pay a little more than anyone else for sharp 69 camaros etc, but they had to be all there. Lots of those cars went overseas.

We used to build the best everything.

streeter, whatta 55! All I got is see #7 on my list. Yes, brand new, sticker in the window. image

#1 - 1965 Porsche 912 w/ ultra-rare painted dash. Thankfully, that is what is parked there.
#2 through #10 - Well, lets just say that I am a rare man who can appreciate what he has.

I realize that 1 car cannot really be called a collection, so whenever people ask me what I collect, I tell them coins & vintage Porsche parts (that happen to be assembled.)
