Cool error Morgan pickup from Summer Seminar! Huge Strike Through! New pics added!

coinkid855coinkid855 Posts: 5,012 ✭✭✭
Hey guys, I just got to Summer Seminar yesterday, so I made a quick stop at Hallenbecks and came back with this! I didn't really pay much of a premium at all for the error! What do you guys think it was struck through, a wood chip? Also, guess the grade!

Edited to add new pics!!

New type of hearing aid back in '02. Just seeing what it would look like before marketing.

I'd say AU58. Neat error coin. To me it looks like it was struck through a piece of metal.

Thanks everyone! It's in an ANACS 63 holder, and I think it's a solid 63, maybe even a 64! But I'll let you know at the end of the week after I take intermediate grading! image

    Paul,
If anyone knows how to grade a Morgan, it should be you. It definitely looks like a 64 (maybe better) since there are so few ticks

Struck through a fragment of wood. After they washed the planchets they dried them in sawdust. New Orleans was (and still is) so humid that sometimes pieces of sawdust stuck to the planchets. That is one of the largest sawdust indents I have ever seen. Sometimes you find the coins with the smaller pieces still in the coin.

Tom - thanks for the technical explanation of this indent. It finally answered a question that has puzzled me for several years about an Indian Cent I used to own, which had a substantial piece of what appeared to be wood lodged in a lamination on the obverse. I sold it to Rick Snow, and as far as I know, he still has it in his possession.image

Of course I'm making the assumption that copper-nickel cent planchets were washed and then dried by the same process.
