Why do raw cards on Ebay sell for more than their graded counterparts???

I saw this listing on Ebay....described as "perfect centering"....

image

The card looks like a PSA 7 (MC)....anymore to the top and Al Kalines name will really be cut in half!!

Anyway, I was just making an observation in that raw cards seem to bring higher than their graded counterparts. Seems like a great business model would be to cut out high grade cards with qualifiers, or really great looking mid grade cards and sell them raw.....those sellers seem to be making a killing!

Some people don't care for graded cards.

A few sellers justify cracking out cards by saying "grading is just an opinion"

Some truth to that / some dishonesty.

First, it depends on who is selling them. Second, people are taking a risk on getting it graded for higher than what they are paying. Third, people use emotion and not their brains. Fourth, some very uneducated people. Fifth, some people dont bother with graded cards, even to crack out. Sixth, some people have more money than brains. Seventh, some people are just stupid. Eighth, did I say some people are just stupid???

Yes!!!!!!!! I don't get out much!!!!! I knew Great Lakes Auction house did that, but I really haven't heard anything from them lately!! I was noticing some wares that this new seller is hawking, and his feedback is perfect!!! The cards, not so much, but the buyers are raving about them!! It sure looks like getting raw cards professionally graded and selling them that way appear to be a much harder money making proposition, than buying the cards already highly graded and cracking them out!

Actually the Kaline may have had perfect centering before the surgery.

  • I agree with you brick. The bottom you can tell is a bit off center, but it looks like there maybe some slight trim that was removed at the top.

Truly, if the buyer knew for sure, it would be impossible for the exact raw vintage card to sell for a higher price than the same PSA graded card, when taking into account the possible factors of a raw card such as hidden flaws and doctoring that can't be seen or may be difficult to see on a scanned pic, and of course authenticity.

That being said, yes it was mentioned about buyers thinking it could get a high grade, and also I think sometimes it's just shill bids and nobody really buys the card.

I forget the dealer, but one dealer on ebay is "famous" for cracking beautiful say PSA 5 cards with a wrinkle, and selling them raw, and the buyers think from the scan it could receive say a 7 or higher. Of course the dealer makes no mention that the card was cracked from a PSA 5 holder.

There are far more collectors that buy raw cards than there are those that buy graded...

Absolutely true. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the sale of high numbers, where NM raw cards will often outperform PSA 8's/SGC 88's.

Its the same reason Strassberg sells for more than Steve Carlton.....potential
  • Graded cards are a choice. It has become and increasing expensive choice for many that cuts into the budget of acquiring new cards.

To some, grading is a matter of investing in their investment. As for me, its only an option to protect and preserve rare and hard to find samples in my collection.

Personally, PSA does not know enough about my hobby to entrust them with my collection. (mislabeled PSA tags, wrong size holders and just plain lack of knowledge) I have to turn to other grading companies that listen and learn and are willing to work with me in furthering my interests.

I hope to have a company on board before the end of the year that will partner to publish my master lists of soccer rookies and super star master set lists.

I don't have one, but if I did, I would crack my 1952 Mantle, PSA 8, and sell it raw on ebay for a nice profit. image

I am sure you are being faceious Steve. There comes a certain price point/grade level, where breaking the cards out don't make much sense.

Are we saying that they do consistently? I doubt it.

    Good for you.

No knowledgeable collector should pay more on ebay for a vintage raw NM looking card, than a vintage PSA 8 card, unless they are a glutton for punishment...and especially from a dealer. Yea, once in a blue moon ya might buy a raw NM looking card on ebay from some "babe in the woods" seller, and it receives a PSA 9, but overall it's fool's folly. Having a card in hand though is a different story when ya fully understand PSA grading.

Perhaps with modern crap cards it doesn't matter, or perhaps nobody wants most modern crap PSA 8 cards - I don't keep track of those cards.

There may be a few instances where you may see a raw selling for more than a graded card.Reasons being the person wants a nice crisp raw set which they can actually look at and admire it from a binder.

well said....i'm learning more each day about the importance of actually viewing a card and a consistently nice & presentable set with cards that look at least near mint can sometimes create a greater positive impression than a heavy box full of off-centered PSA 8's.
