Busted some '89 Upper Deck boxes...

I opened 3 '89 UD boxes from BBCE tonight. At first... NOTHING. A single Roberto Alomar was the best card I had after about 20 packs. Then *BOOM* a Griffey! I opened the rest of the first box and the entire second box and that was still about all I had. So I went to a minor league game, came home, and opened the last box. SCORE! Three more Griffeys, a Randy Johnson, and a few more nice cards. This was much better than the two boxes I got on ebay recently with no Griffeys (but a TON of R Johnsons!) especially since I think 2 or 3 of the Griffeys have a shot at 10. Thoughts on that?

Last time, I got 8 Oil Can Boyds in 2 boxes. This time, I think I got around 15+ Damon Berryhills in 3.
2.5 is pretty much my speed.

  • Do you happen to know if these were the last of the boxes BBCE had for sale? I had a couple in my shopping cart the other night, but when I finally tried to checkout I was told the boxes were no longer in stock : ( I would have been happy with just 1 Griffey. Anyways, congrats on the Griffeys... hope you score some 10's!

When I ordered them (on Mon, I believe) I called in and they said they had 5 left, of which I bought 3.

How in the world did that top right Griffey make it in that soft sleeve?

    Nice Griffeys.

But, Mark Lemke is one of the better cards? image

Mark Lemke has to hold the MLB record for most groundouts to second in a career. He never struck out and almost never got a hit. Ugggh. Mark Lemke, BJ Surhoff, Brian Jordan... Bobby's pets. He always like to add a few more outs to the order. He effectively shortened the game for the other team by giving his lineup at least one other automatic out other than the pitcher's spot. Some years he'd have two. This really killed the Braves in World Series when they were facing AL teams who had the big bat for the DH.

  • Great job on the Griff's even if they are all only 8's, that basically pays for the boxes. I picked up 2 of them at the $69 rate as well. Hope to get a few Griffey's as well.

    Good luck with the grading!

I think I got the last 2 boxes they had on special. I bought them when Steve posted on his site that there were 2 left. To everyone who thinks they missed out, don't worry, I got nothing out of the 2 boxes. No Griffey's or Randy's, no Dale Murphy, no Sheffields. I pulled 2 Smoltz rookies, but nothing close to a 10.

Man, what a bummer. I only got one Murphy and it was not the error. These boxes are so hit or miss.

I bought 2 boxes from bbce that I busted on weds. pulled 3 total griffeys one really nice..

on a side note.. no johnsons, biggio or roberto alomar and 1 sheffield

so i feel pretty stoked to get 3 griffeys, obviously why you buy those boxes

Brian Jordan played 3 full seasons with Atlanta, then came back for 2 more where he batted a total of 350 times (and, admittedly, was not good). His first 3 years with ATL:

    23/115/.283
    17/77/.264
    25/97/.295

I'll give you that Cox seemed to always have a black hole in the lineup - but Jordan wasn't it.
