and "Pointed Tail Nine" 1964 Dimes were
heavily promoted in 1964/65.
( I was 14 years old then, but still remember!)
After literally a few years, they fell out of favor
and/or interest. They are not recognized by
any TPG as far as I know, and there is no
interest in them whatsoever by error or die
varieity collectors - one of the reasons is that
they are incredibly easy to find (the Pointed
Tails were suppossed to be the 'rarer' type) -
I'd guess, roughly, that at least a third of the
mintage of BU's are PT9's. Can't remember the
incidence of Proof PT9's, but they are very very
easy to find in sets......
It appears to be more interesting due to it's
history (as a promoted item) than as to any
significance as a die variety. Yes, it is a different
die, and yes it's a varieity, but no one really
seems to care - at least for the past 40+ years!
My only experience with the "Pointed 9" proof is that it's usually accompanied in the proof set by an Accented Hair Kennedy.
The name is LEE!
