PCGS Rattler Slabs. How far could one collect Proof silver eagles?

If I wanted to stick to only PCGS rattler holders how many different proof silver eagles would be in my set at completion?

    At most 4;.......... 86,87,88 and 89.

The rattler was discontinued at the end of sept 1989 so unless the 1990 coins were released early, the run stops at 1989.

I don't recall ever seeing an ASE in a rattler, but then again I have not been looking for them.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

Holder has a few minor cracks, but it is one of two ASEs I have seen in Rattlers. Neat coin to own.

Paraphrasing Dr. Sheldon, the best way to find
out how common something is, is to stick your
neck out and say how rare it is.

    This thread is funny!!

I have a December 1, 1989 PCGS population report which I use to determine maximum possible rattler populations for my own collections. Rattlers were discontinued several weeks before this report, but I use this date to make sure all the rattlers were through the system to get an upper population bound.

Here are the PCGS pops of proof silver eagles as of late November/early December 1989:

    1986-S PR: 264
    1987-S PR: 36
    1988-S PR: 32
    1989-S PR: 5

Clearly, 1987-S and 1988-S are scarce in rattler holders, and 1989-S is downright rare. It's interesting to note that of the 5 1989-S coins, 1 is PR65 and 4 are PR66, so they're not super-grade coins.

Do you have the population info for the bullion/bus. strike ASEs?

Talk about a short set! Four coins to complete a proof PCGS Rattler collection. Of course, as the pops show, the 89-S is the deal breaker.

Being of such low grades it wouldn't be surprising if they (89-S's) were cracked out already. image

    Sure.

1986 Eagle S$1 MS: 195 (including 1 MS70 which almost certainly still resides in a rattler)
    1987 Eagle S$1 MS: 44
    1988 Eagle S$1 MS: 22
    1989 Eagle S$1 MS: 11

If anyone wants to know population in a certain grade, you can PM me. Most of these coins are MS 67 and MS 68.

Even a short registry set of those would be tough.
