Help A New Guy Understand Cross-Grading

I understand that different people have different opinions on coins. The differences between one grade can be marginal. I can see why people would want to get coins slabbed. A probable grade and almost certain authenticity is a very nice safety net for people whom can't grade and authenticate coins with expertise. What I don't understand is why people get a coin slabbed, then cross graded, then secure plus then CAC then... it just seems like it's turning something that's supposed to be a fun and fulfilling hobby with appreciate of the artwork, history, and rarity of coins into something else.

Maybe I am just too new to get it but if I see PCGS MS65 and I like the way the coin looks... that's good enough for me.

But what if someone else looks at that MS65 and thinks this might make MS66 and be worth a lot more money.
Just one of many things that you will see as you traverse the road of coin collecting.

Some with a bit more experience will know that all PCGS MS65's are not created equal. I once knew a collector that just looooved dark original coins, so much so that we joking called his set the Kingsford Collection. With a bit more experience, he started selling off his 'wonderful' dark coins and buying eye appealing lightly toned pieces. He took losses on the dark ones and has turned down profits on the light ones.

Check out ha.com and the realized prices and you will see that there is a TON of value in a CAC sticker.

That's why you do that. It's worth money :0

If one's intentions are pure, with no thought of anything but enjoyment of the hobby, then minor issues like what a coin is worth is unimportant. You can then ignore all this talk about
cross grading, upgrades, crackouts, and stickering. Of course, if stretching your dollar is important with the intention of getting some, most or all of it back someday, then understanding this topic is important.

I was going to say the shoes are the hardest part to find that fit properly.

Really though, don't miss out on a good coin because of the slab it is in. Buy the coin not the slab. You can always cross it over if that is what you want.
