ATTENTION US MINT RESEARCHERS: Help Needed!

RKKayRKKay Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭
For those of you who don't already know, I have been researching 1854/1855 Large Flying Eagle Cent patterns. I have been reviewing my research and have a huge gap at a crucial point in time, namely between June 24, 1854 and December 13, 1854. I had no letters, notes etc. pertaining to cent patterns during that timeframe. I have a December 13, 1854 letter from Mint Director Snowden to Sec. of the Treasury Guthrie, which refers to a December 11, 1854 letter from Guthrie to Snowden. It is clear from my research that there is a lot of significance going on between late June in mid-December of 1854.

Kevin Flynn has already conducted a great deal of research at the National Archives, and I have personally reviewed the Longacre Papers. Does anyone have, or know of, any documents during the timeframe in question that could be of assistance? Thanks. Rick

Absolutely. Rick Snow has tentatively agreed to collaborate. Once I get a full grasp on the facts on the evolution of the LFE, I will hound Rick to pursue it.

Thanks Keyman. Research-wise, I feel that I'm in the stretch run. I just need to figure out what happened during these 5 1/2 months. Rick

How good are you at Time Travel? Do you own a Delorean? Good luck! The info has to be out there somewhere.

It is clear from my research that there is a lot of significance going on between late June in mid-December of 1854.

what led you to this conclusion??

Without revealing details, there was a note from June 1854 that made it clear to me LFEs were soon to be discussed, and there was a letter in mid-December 1854 referencing specimens that have been delivered. I know for a fact there were no LFEs struck before the June 1854 note.

I have read the papers of that period and find one letter for the time-frame in
question. On December 7, 1854, Director Snowden wrote the Treasury Secretary
mentioning the proposed bronze cents. My index note appears to indicate that
specimens were sent. The original can be checked if desired.

My notes indicate a second letter (dated XX/24/1854) but the tape recorder had a
noise at this point and the month is not audible. My index note says that it mentions
pattern German Silver cents with a hole.

I also have a copy of the December 11, 1854, letter.
