It is too long to quote here, but the ABSOLUTE BEST thing I have ever read about MS70, PR/PF70 coins is page 81 of this GREAT book. If you have a copy, look it up! If you are willing to post your thoughts and comments here about what is revealed on that page, please do so.
For gold, silver and platinum moderns, I collect 69. Let others play the crackout and registry game. I am in it for the coin.

Since I do not have this book or know who the author is, do you think you could paraphrase it for me?

A VERY rough summary - with enough resubmissions, many (if not most) choice 69s can be made 70s. Both by our hosts and ATS.
An experiment was done with 100 attractive 69s and kept track of the results through 5 crack-out and resubmission cycles for each TPG. Out of 100 coins, at the end of 5 resubmission cycles, they had 91 70s from ATS. With the other 100 coins they had 74 70s from our hosts at the end of 5 resubmission cycles. The experiment was done using high-end 69s of course.
By the way, Eric Jordan is a member of this forum, so if he wants to jump in and speak for himself, that would be great.
I am a fan of Eric's book (and my son Justin assisted Eric with the Pres. $1 section of the book and his story is mentioned on 2 pages of the book as well)!!
I have plenty of data on grading "experiments" as well. Some highly successful and others more like JEKYLL AND HYDE!! It would be a good idea for all collectors to test the grading results on coins in their series ... in all grades whether they are 70 graded coins or MS67RD Lincolns or MS67FB dimes! I could probably write a book on the "experiements" that failed miserably and cost me dearly, just as easily as a book on the "experiments" that worked and were "homeruns"!!

<< <i>So in other words, our TPGs are creating a false market for 70 coins? Doesn't sound like the greatest investor news. I think only our host and ATS can put to rest this debate by explaining what exactly the difference between a 69 and a 70 is and backing it up with some sort of evidence. I don't do the modern thing. But I am interested in what REALLY is going on in the market place with this 69/70 debate. >>
The TPGs do not create the market, false or otherwise, for 70s. The TPGs offer a grading OPINION. The market is created by the buyers and sellers of that opinion.
<< <i>All this experiment tells me is that they either screwed up the first time, or the second time. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for either TPG. >>
The TPGs did NOT screw up either time. The TPGs offer a grading OPINION, and many dealers make a living off of the fact that that OPINION is not absolutely consistent, especially over time.
I am a great fan of our hosts and think they do great work.

I would have to disagree with this statement... the TPGs created the plastic market... even today, 30 years later, I doubt you'd see a raw MS70 in a 2x2? I know I never saw a raw MS70 when I was growing up; that is, until the TPGs started slabbing MS70s.
