How Many National Parks Can You Visit This Summer?
from the June 2011 edition of The Whitman Review

Depending on where you live, you could visit every national park
and site in your state in a single summer. In some states, all it would
take is a single weekend! In others, you would need a whole year of
weekends to explore each location.

I live in Georgia, which is home to 11 different national recreation areas,
parks, seashores, monuments, battlefields, and other historic sites. Or 12,
if you count the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, which rambles down from
Maine. I could probably visit all of them in a single summer, but it would be
better to stretch the experience out into autumn (a wonderful season for
travel in the Southeast).

Meanwhile, if you live in Illinois, New Hampshire, or Vermont, or in one of
the nation’s several territories, you’ll find a single destination site on your
list—perfect for a road trip! (Some national “parks,” like the Lewis and
Clark National Historic Trail, are roads or pathways themselves, meandering
through multiple states.)

Today a new book from Whitman Publishing, America’s Beautiful National
Parks
, by Aaron J. McKeon, tells about the 56 different sites honored in
the U.S. Mint’s National Park quarters program. The coins were first minted
in 2010, and the program will run through 2021. Each state, each territory,
and the District of Columbia will have a national site honored on a quarter dollar.

Appendix D in America’s Beautiful National Parks is a “Traveler’s Checklist
of U.S. National Parks and Sites.”

Use it as a handy guide while you visit the parks in your state and collect
the new quarters. This could be the beginning of a new family tradition.
When you collect the new National Park quarters with your children or
grandchildren, you’ll share a fun family hobby for the next 10 years.

I thought you said last year that the 5th edition of Volume II of the Cherrypickers' Guide would be out the beginning of this year image

Maybe you need to crack the whip a little more often with the Editors, don't cut them any slack image

The Cherrypickers' Guide team was last seen floating on a makeshift raft in the Grand Canyon, subsisting only on wildberries, cactus, and the occasional canyon burro. They've been wrangled together, though --- the editors, that is, not the burros --- and the 5th edition, volume II, is in its final stages of production!

"Final Stages of Production" - So what does that mean to the common folk? 3 months out, 6 months out, 9 months out, 1 year out? Something in between 2 of those?

    Good Question.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

The Final Stages of Production™ are bigger than a breadbox,
and smaller than the Empire State Building.

Actually we're in the process of final editorial work and typesetting,
and then the book goes to press. Ken Bressett and Dave Bowers
have each written a foreword. A press release is being lovingly
hand-crafted. We'll announce an update at the ANA World's Fair
of Money in Chicago, and the book will roll out a few weeks after that.
