Feuchtwanger 1A from Italy via ebay....Nice obverse, but......

I scan ebay for these and when one of the scarce varieties pops up, even if it has a few issues....Im a buyer if the price is OK. This variety 1A was on ebay...listed by a numismatic dealer/seller in Italy, and featured a VERY nice obverse, but the reverse however suffered at the hands of someone who thought they may get a bit more for the coin back in the day if it didnt say "one cent" on the back...and they sat there with a sharp tool and tried their best to eradicate the denomination.

But, however, he did make a coin whch it seems NO ONE would take, for one cent, or one dime, or one whatever (remember, it DID come from Italy
)......and stopped its circulation it seems, leaving it with a nice high XF to AU obverse which shows off the interesting version of the eagle on obverse 1. To say the least...it is not artistically up to the efforts of some of the other Feuchtwanger one cent eagles. Note also, the crude and large dentils, 67 in number. These were reduced in size on all other issues, and though the number varies, averages about 83. The reverse,. rotated so that ONE CENT is roughly in line with the high points of the Eagle (only variety 1 and 2 have this rotation), shows a breakdown of the F in Feuchtwanger, and also to my eye seems almost doubled in places on the wreath. The reeding is exceptionally strong and square, much different from Federal issues. The weight of the coin is 39.5 grains, far short of the reported 46 grain specimen submitted to the US Mint. To date, Ive not found any pieces over 40 grains. Wear is a major contributor to weight loss with these, up to 5 grains will come off the weight due to wear on the high points of the eagle and rest of the coin.
I bought this one because I loved the obverse. The reverse, though techically a "problem" also tells a story of these coins, in that they look "too good" for a penny...and no doubt much confusion resulted over the years. Scratching off the denomination is something Ive seen before on these, and many bear SOME scratching on the reverse.
