Nice find for change. Just shows you that even if 1.7 mil where made it's hard to find a very nice one or every one would have one. I think after some look at rolls or mint set they will know how hard it is to find a Nice one.

Short answer: There was a dramatic increase in coin demand resulting in a huge coin shortage, which the Mint erroneously blamed on coin collectors (automation, i.e. vending machines and parking meters etc. were the main culprits). San Francisco had been closed since 1955, and Philly and Denver were not well equipped to handle the demand. Congress authorized the Mint to place a 1964 date freeze on all coins struck until the shortage was alleviated. Coins with the 1964 date were struck well into 1965, nearly until the end of the year. With ramped up production for nearly two years, the end result is mucho nickels bearing the 1964 date.
