Stacks Bowers auctions have some new things going on

Just viewed online many of the coins in the upcoming Baltimore sale, and see some changes in the presentation.

For the first time in the history of either Bowers or Stacks, reserves are now posted on the site. Previously, Bowers would post either minimum bids or no reserve, and Stacks, to my knowledge, had neither.

Also, in the images, there is now a high resolution link at the bottom of the page for the coin.

I believe both of these changes will improve the bidding on the site.

And their imaging is excellent.

Not the point. There is usually a large difference between just the coin images and those images with the coin & the slab

I agree... when they list the coin, they shouldn't include the grade or mention the TPG! Great suggestion Capt'n H!

I agree that the images have improved but at least for the series I monitor, there could still be a lot of improvement in showing toning accurately (toning is largely shown as shades of gray) and luster is still very difficult (if not impossible) to judge. I realize that premium imaging may be unrealistic for the full range of coins they auction but maybe premium coins could have premium images.

Clearly agree that slab shot would be a great help also.

I found myself spending A LOT of time going through their auctions. Finding examples I thought I really liked then going over to Heritage to look up the same coins, the historical sale info and PCGS price guide info and if they have any of the same examples coming up for auction soon. Holy Cow! That was exhausting. Heritage sure does make it easy with the reference info right there.

Something BROKEN on the Stack's website that annoys me - Once you add something to your watch list you cannot remove it from your watch list. The button does not work! I tried Internet Explorer and Firefox web browsers....UGH!

Having another angle shot of the coin may shed more light on the qualities of the coin, I agree.

But wouldn't it be nice that an expert, though there are a few within each series, would be brought in to view and add their opinions on a number of those coins?

They lost my business when they wanted me to eat a few coins they failed to properly describe and provide decent pictures. I imagine they lost a lot of people that way.

I'm looking at a half dozen coins right now that are coming up but the pictures are dark and the descriptions are insufficient. Having been more disappointed than not, it's unlikely I'll pull the trigger on any of them. And of course, the search continues wherever I can find them.

i have long thought the same thing. a picture "OF" the slab gives an idea of when the coin was graded and i have always tried to reference the label as a color check for what the coin really looks like. both Stack's and Heritage tend to crank up the volume on the light, so an in-holder shot is helpful. as to "Buy the coin, not the plastic" it seems sort of a ridiculous statement since the grade and service is a known that's given in the description.

Photo of coin in holder a must!

Recently I have looked at a bunch of coins from the 1700s on Heritage. The main images of the silver coins have been brightened/over exposed so much that some of them look really nice with light toning...but then when you scroll down and see the photo of the coin in the holder you quickly realize the coin is close to BLACK. Not a coin I want in most cases. Stack's needs to do this ASAP! No way will I bid blind at Stack's...especially with the risk of not being able to return it or return it for a fee when it was their screw up. I don't understand why auction houses allow photos of an auction item to make it to the web when the photo looks nothing like what is being sold. It makes no sense to me.

Stack's also needs to fix their system so you can REMOVE an item from your watch list. That is LAME and annoying!
