Anyone collecting from circulation?

I started off collecting from circulation in the late 1970s & early 1980s. Was never able to find all the Jefferson nickels. Finding high grade 1960s clad quarters was very difficult.
Then other interests intervened. I never graduated to actually buying coins. I scan my pocket change nowadays but that's about it.

Anyone care to share pics of ongoing circulation finds? Or is it only about buying slabbed stuff, "rips", "crossovers", upgrades, etc?

I actively work on a 1975 to date Lincoln Memorial set in a blue whitman album. The goal is the nicest RED specimens I can roll, or change pick.

Its a slow go, with lots of upgrades that go on...but it is amazing how challenging it really is...and also, how many surprises you DO find!

....you wonder just WHERE that nice red 1971 has been all these years!

I guess you could say the only coins that I would never sell are the silver
dimes and halves that I pull from circulation. The rest are salable.

All of my 1965 to date US coins have been pulled from circulation except the dollars and half dollars. (Some of the latter are circulation finds, others I purchased because I can't get them locally) I have a complete run of Philadelphia Lincolns from 1934-2011, all of which (and some previously, as far back as 1912) have been found in circulation. I have hunted down in circulation every clad dime except 2009 D and the 2011 issues.

I've scanned most of them and they appear here: My USA coin collection website

They are in chronological order after the older coins, which are a combination of purchased and inherited.

I've got a real nice set of cents from 1955 to date, all red, pulled from boxes. Working on a set of silver dimes, have a short set of Mercs and only missing 4 roosies and a nearly full set of nickels, short a 38 and 39 D, '43-D, and '50-D.

Suffice to say, I am probably one of the biggest searchers of change in the Philly area.

I still look for certain dates of a few series, in my pocket change, but that's not exactly "collecting" from circulation.

I still to this day check my change, and I would keep any silver, but it's been many years since finding any silver.

As far as wheaties, older nickels, etc...I say throw 'em back in circulation...let the kids find them and help grow interest in our hobby. Keeping a wheatie to me is near worthless both in thrill and value...however to a young collector, it might be priceless, know what I'm saying?

My only real series is cents, 58 to 95(?), Whitman folder. All from circulation, no roll searching, purely from pocket change. All red, all BU. I'm about 80% done. As you'd expect, it started off fast with lots of holes being filled. But the remaining pieces are coming very few and far between--though I always check dates and compare really good looking pieces with what's in the folder, to replace when I can.

I regularly looks for about anything from 1959 or earlier. I regularly find wheats in circulation as well as well circulated Jeffersons that I have been putting in albums. Obviously any circulated silver gets put in my collections. I also search for error coins that I keep a mental list of when going through change, but those finds are few and far between.

I've been watching the clads since 1965 and pulled out many gems and varieties over
the years. But since 1997 I've been collecting dimes and quarters from circulation
whether they are gem or not. My quarter set is all XF- and better now with post-'94
coins in chUnc or better. The dimes are VF and better with the bulk in AU or Unc. I've
got a bunch of the quarter varieties but none of the dimes.

The sets are a lot of fun and the quarters make it more interesting.

To get some of these scarce and interesting quarter varieties, you have to pick them out of circulation. No dealer is selling them.

Need to work on my Lincolns. Also, I might do the NP quarters....if they ever show up in circulation!

I'm still working on albums for cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters with probably 95%+ of them from roll searching and change I get. It is a lot more difficult than I expected with a lot of upgrades as I find better examples, and a lot of the proofs especially I will probably never find and have to buy. But it's fun, especially when you find something a lot nicer than the typical circulation coins, and it is a feeling of accomplishment as you see the albums fill up over time. I also do a lot of roll searching with half dollars but I haven't started an album yet, probably will at some point.

Yes indeedies, in the past two weeks of coin searching from bank baggies, I have found 2 Indians, and 9 Buffers - best find was a '38-D. I have filled up my Whitman folder of 1941-1975. The 1909-1940 is about half done. The Canada 1920-1964 is only missing 4-5 dates.

I search weekly. It is a fun way to enjoy coins. No worries about fakes, cleaned or other problem coins. More like a brief treasure hunt. I also like the foreign coins that occasionally appear and have a binder filled with them which I use to educate my son. Lately my focus has been on halves. We've found 31 of 48 Walkers, my Franklins are missing a couple and the Kennedys 2011 haven't made their way to the boxes yet.

look i'll file it in a jar and take a longer look at it later, before releasing to circulation. just a chronic habit from long ago. image

I look at all my change and also do some roll searching when I have time. Here's what I've put together from either pocket change or roll searching over the years...

    Pres. $ P&D 2007-date

Kennedy Half P&D 1964-date (there were only a few dates I never found in rolls)

    Washington 25c P&D 1965-2009

    Roosevelt 10c P&D 1965-date

Jefferson 5c PDS 1938-date (still missing about 10 or so)

    Lincoln Memorial PDS 1959-date

I buy two rolls of each presidential dollar as they come out. Save one head-tails roll for later, open one roll and sort by quality, saving best one or two for a set, spending the rest.

not really collecting "from circulation" as i get the rolls at my bank. the coins i put in circulation get withdrawn and probably don't get spent again, as no one gets any in change.

of course, anything unusual i do find in the rolls (several very prooflike coins, some with very light edge lettering, a couple of super gems) get set collected, along with anything unusual from regular change, the occasional wheat cent, silver dime, foreign coin, etc)

I got a beautiful silver 1964 Dime in change a few months ago which led me to open "The Box" of coins my father left me 24 years ago. I have now pulled many pre 1964 coins from my change. Dont know whats going on in Southern New Mexico, but I like it!

Yes, all denominations. I started filling Whitman folders again in 1987, and it is always interesting to see the more complete books and the nice AU stuff I put into folders back then.

I've been filling a Dansco state quarters (P&D only, no proofs) album strictly with coins I receive in change for the last several years. Being in California, I'm missing a lot of 'P' mint coins. I don't go out of my way to upgrade, but if I notice a really flashy quarter in change, I might replace the one in there.
