I have collected young head Wilhelmina coinage for quite a few years - she was a long ruling monarch of The Netherlands who had numerous portraits on her coinage during her reign. When this medal came up for auction recently I knew I had to have it:
This medal was created as a prize medal, in bronze, silver and gold and was meant to be engraved and awarded in 1892. It is a large 77 millimetre sized bronze medal that has fantastic detail with a good high relief.
I like the portrait because of the similarity in the portrait with that used on the coinage in the early and mid 1890's.

Had she not abdicated in 1948, and continued as queen until she died, she would have been the second longest reigning monarch in European history, she would have reigned for 72 years - and would have been the longest reigning queen ever.

queen Elizabeth still reigning , will be 60 years on the throne next year, and she is not planning to abdicate.
she has the genes of her mother , so will probably live to be a hunderd + , good for here.
her husband Prince Philippe will give an interview on BBC tonight , in honour of his 90th birthday.
very nice medal Saor, portrait is of Wilhelmina made in 1890 at age 10 , in 1898 a new portrait was made, when she became acting queen of the Netherlands.

Truth be known, in Netherlands Wilhelmina knew she could count on Juliana to do the job, then Juliana knew she could count on Beatrix to become Queen. Queen Elizabeth is not afforded the same comfort - actually for the good of the monarchy and Great Britain - she will hopefully live a very long and fulfilling life so that when and or if, Charles becomes Queen, her reign will be a brief bump and then Prince William can become King.
