Guaranteed Mr. Harper had a nice visit with the manager and you won't see that happen again. Unless he likes dusting himself off from time to time. image

That kind of behavior will not be tolerated as he moves up the ranks and there are a lot of relief pitchers that throw gas that will come looking for him.

    Not a good move.
  • Call him already and let's see what he's made of!!! He is just a kid at 18.

from what I read, he did get buzzed up & in during his next at bat. I've also read he's making quite a name for himself, but not a good one. I'm not sure if an A-ball manager has the authority to jerk this particular kid's chain, so it may not be getting addressed the way we all think/know it should.

Wow! I agree, some retribution from opposing pitchers will be forth coming. Incredible talent, but lets hope he figures it out the unwritten rules of the game soon. How about that Mustache!

I agree with you, but if I'm the Nationals GM I call down to the manager and tell him to get into the kid's face about it. When I was saying that the manager would visit him, it was with the understanding that it was coming from above. If not, the Nationals will have a big problem on their hands sooner rather than later.

Given his track record in college, this can't be a surprise. Different rules for the uber-talented in all parts of life. Many minor leaguers don't stand out from the other guys. He will always standout and always be marked every time he does something like this.
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.

God forbid he interject some entertainment into the sport. I wish more sluggers would taunt and I wish more pitchers would earhole them when they did. Maybe if those things happened with more frequency I could stay awake for more than two innings straight.

More importantly...the ball sounds verrrrrry nice coming off his bat.

Virtually every article I've read about him portrays him as arrogant and smug and this just further illustrates that. I wonder how that will go over on the big stage.

Yeah, this is all one sided, who knows what lead up to the kiss. I've read he'd been getting pitched inside the whole series (however long it was); who knows what kind of mouth was coming from the mound or what kind of jaw flapping had occurred previously.

I'll tell you one thing, if he does that on the major league level, he's going to get beaned. I'm all for entertainment, but if I'm running the Nationals, I don't want my franchise player putting my investment at risk like that.

You guys raise a great point about entertainment value lacking in baseball.

The problem is every few weeks it seems I look on Yahoo and some pitcher is complaining about the un written rules of baseball.

If he blows kisses in the bigs he will get beaned no questions asked.

Perhaps the players need to revisit the so called un written rules and get over their egos and add the entertainment value that is lacking.

I'm not defending what he did because by all accounts he is an arrogant kid, but the pitcher was jawing at him as he rounded the bases. Could have had something to do with the way he admired his HR too though image

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I love baseball and everything, but so many players are just wound SO TIGHT. It's a wonder that opposing players don't eff with guys' heads more often. Seems like it would be effective.

Nobody "throws a kiss" at the pitcher without a dam good reason, and some possible reasons were told in the story, and I would have to imagine there were a few more as well.

That being said, yes, he's gonna get some "chin music" doing that. LOL

Whether Ruth actually pointed to the bleachers is highly debatable. I hope you're not using John Goodman as a reference.

Charlie Root always insisted that Ruth wasn't calling his shot, but merely indicating there were two strikes.
Root stated that had he been pointing to the bleachers the next pitch would've been in his ear.

I don’t think anyone would label Griffey as arrogant and smug. There is a difference between playing with conference and being a hot dog. I am certain in any case that the Nats front office would rather not see too much of the latter from a guy who is supposed to be their golden child.

  • I just finally watched that clip. That is what the stink is all over??

That was barely anything. I had envisioned like my daughter blowing me a kiss goodnight with her hand. He gave the pitcher a little kiss, FU I got the best of you.

We don't think that happens in the majors??? Come on those guys talk smack like crazy, so dose the NBA, so does the NFL, and well the NHL they just bite your fingers instead....

I can guarantee you that if a player does that in the majors he will get beaned or hit in retaliation. Guys get hit for not running fast enough around the bases after a HR.

Yeah, that's what Charlie Root says...take it for what it's worth, after all he is the pitcher that gave up the most famous Home Run in MLB history. BTW, did you know that a Supreme Court Justice was in the stands that day and says Ruth did in fact call his shot? Read this. Of course, we'll never know for sure but that what makes a great legend right?

And as far as Harper goes, he's 18 and the world has been handed to him. Let's hope he can get a handle on it all and immature displays such as this disappear and he gets older and enters MLB.

For the record he got hit the AB before and has been mentioned the pitcher was jawing at him.

    Still....

You don't do that. You made your point with your HR.

While we're on this, don't you think Mr. Ortiz was a little flippant with his bat flip (pun intended) last night vs. the Yankees? Two nights ago Brennan Boesch goes off against the Rangers. 2 HRs in first 2 ABs, then a single and a double next 2 ABs (I think). He comes up again in the 9th, with the Rangers losing by 6 or 7. And the relief pitcher throws away, away, away. I'm sorry but after HR #2, Boesch is eating dirt. I'm coming up and in to back him off, not trying to hit him, just knock him down so he won't be comfortable anymore, it seems like this never happens anymore.

    Well then, that explains it.

I'm starting to like Bryce Harper.

  • GootGoot Posts: 3,496
Here is another view. The pitcher has his back turned, watching his pitch sail out of the park, while Harper does his bat flip. Then, as Harper is rounding second you can see the pitcher walk in that direction. Looks like the pitcher was talking crap despite not seeing the bat flip.
