I'm glad you posted this as I was at a small show this weekend and one dealer in particular had 4 pcgs slabs with this issue. Prior to today, I had never seen it. I suspected that they were fake slabs but I am pretty sure they are legit. One was a 93-S dollar in vg-10 with a CAC sticker. The coin looked great and certainly real to me. Another was an early circulated $5 gold piece in vf-25 and also real. I was stumped.
No idea, but I have now seen it.

These flexible rings are molded and that is a seam rather than a crack where the two halves of the mold came together.

Maybe it's an act of rebellion against the coin that is inside.

I haven't seen this effect yet,
    even with out-of-shape error
coins, so I don't have any
'inside info' or reason why they
    would crack like that.

The plastic ring is soft, so it should
'give' a bit - you'll have to ask
    PCGS why......sorry I can't be of help.

Heat on the seam caused it to deform.
I left the blue box of slabs setting too close to a base board heater this is one of three that got damagesd.
    image
Edited to add clearer image. And suls of more heat image.

Results of more exposure i.e. the coin closest to the edge of the blue box.

Interesting. That second one is extreme.

Interesting! The dealer I saw that had some also indicated that it was a heat issue. Which begs the question....are such slabs indicators of improper storage, or worse?

Actually, the question I'd be more interested in is whether the coin is salvageable in cases like the 96-W dime. Perhaps DW will give a definitive answer.

Mine was a case of wrong place wrong time I set the box beside the desk near the base board unit in a small apartment that I was living in at the time and it got cold and I forgot to move it. I will note that the temp was hot but I did not recieve a burn when I picked up the blue PCGS box and the storage box was not deformed by the heat.

Syl - Do you think the heat caused the golden toning on the 96-P?

No it was that way before, the heat was not extreme enough to cause any change in the coins IMO. And that coin is not even worth a reholder fee.
