Question on Crossing Submissions

I have several coins I'm sending in shortly for a cross to PCGS.

Several of which are CAC, which I bought with the assumption that a CAC coin will cross at grade.

Is that a safe assumption?

No. Several have been reported as actually downgrading.

A CAC sticker simply means that the coin is Good for the Grade by whoever graded it.

    Ok, follow up question:

Does that mean that CAC should then Gold sticker it if it downgrades?

Technically yes, if CAC knew the coin was being downgraded and could track it via photos or invoice, etc. But we all know that once something is in a slab that holder
bias starts to apply. No one ever said that CAC can't change their mind or that CAC and PCGS will agree on a majority of coins. We already know that CAC disagrees with
the majority of PCGS/NGC MS64 to MS67 Saints that it sees. And that's just one series. PCGS would probably agree with nearly all of the CAC coins in PCGS holders. It's
the ones in NGC holders that they often don't agree with. image

If you find a fool proof way to cross NGC MS/PF 64-67 CAC type coins let me know. I have a few that don't cross no matter how many times they've been sent in.

Again that would be a no image. With crossovers you have to take into consideration that grading a coin (especially of high value) threw a plastic holder is not easy. In my experience cracking the coin out usually warrants the best results but before doing so, you better know what your doing!

You should be safe more often than not...but NO, it is not a safe assumption. I recommend cracking the coins before sending them to PCGS...especially the NGC Coins. I had a bad experience recently. When you put a minimum grade on the form, they actually GRADE the COIN while it is in the NGC Holder. Those holders are tough to grade through then sometimes you have flaws or scratches on the holder etc etc...for me any future NGC Stuff will be cracked out before sending it in to PCGS for grading.

No way I am willing to crack an NGC/CAC holder just so the PCGS grader can view the coin raw, too much to lose if the coin comes back "Genuine".

There is no guarantee that a NGC/CAC coin will cross at grade, not even a guarantee that the coin will cross at any grade. When the coin comes back from PCGS with the notation Artificial Color, or Cleaned, or Altered Surfaces, or Environmental Damage, all one will get is "Genuine". No chance of a lower grade.

I have some expensive NGC/CAC coins that have failed to cross at the next lower grade even when submitted twice. My experience is, that a NGC/CAC coin will not cross to PCGS at even one grade lower, 10% of the time.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
