Two Lincoln Cent albums I picked up at a local auction yesterday...how did I do?

I picked these two old whitman albums up yesterday at an estate type auction for $50, how did I do? (Note: There were alot of silver dollars and a few gold pieces and it seemed everyone's attention was on the CC dollars and 1928 Peace along with the gold coins- these penny albums seemed to have slipped under the radar):

The albums- last coin in was a 1966

I had looked in the first album prior to the auction and not in the second until I got home, I had just mentioned to a friend that the only thing that could make this book valuable would be a ....

1955 DDO ? Thoughts and opinions? - I have to say my jaw just about dropped seeing this one

Now do I get a you suck, or a you got taken ? There was no 14-D or 31-S in the set, most of the other coins were there. I'm a little skeptical of the DDO- I can't see the lines by the T in the cent that a genuine coin is supposed to have, but it does look to have been in the book along time and it looks to have wear, a lamination and some verdigris.

The S on the VDB looks added, the 09-S looks ok, the 22 looks like a weak D, and the 1955 looks good to me. Overall, I think you did great!! if just one of those 4 coins is legit, and I think 3 of them are (the 22 Weak D is still worth something!), then you'll come out well!

Edited to add: The Mint Mark on the VDB actually looks to be in the right place for position 4, but it looks to be sitting on top of the coin. I feel it may be added, but it could just be the photo!

that s looks added to me too. that was my first thought when i saw it. also, i am thinking the d was removed from the 1922. is that possible? the 55 looks good to me though. i would be very happy with that purchase.

That is awesome! By far the 1955 is my favorite. image

I'm suspicious of the 1909-S VDB, isn't the dot between the D-B supposed to be centered? It may be lighting, but it doesn't look to be centered in the photo.

I'd say you hit the jackpot! Should be in the "you suck" realm.

I'm also very suspicious of the 1909-S VDB, and the 1922 is just a very worn 1922-D (I don't think it has the diagnostics of the Weak D varieties), but the other two look like major scores.

For those skeptics out there, almost 20 years ago (sheesh I'm old) I was at a similar auction and bought three books just like those. In the hole for the 1922 Plain was a well worn but genuine Die Pair #2 example, I sent it off to ANACS where it graded Good-4. I also know someone who around the same time found a 1955 Doubled Die in a Whitman folder. Most bidders (and apparently lots of auctioneers) won't even bother looking closely at those books, especially if the coins look heavily circulated.

Kevin, you should change the title of this thread to "Hey n00bs, *this* is what a YOU SUCK looks like!" imageimage

The S on the 09 S VDB, as many have already said looks suspicious. I don't think anyone has said it yet, but it looks way to strong and to far away from the coin if you get my drift. I too think the DDO is the winner in this group, but it seems to have a lamination that wants to happen? Or is that just something else?

    Well done for $50.

The SVDB looks totally Kosher to me. I see the VDB periods in the correct positions. The 22D is just a very worn die 22D and carries no premium. As long as a lump is there where the D is...its NOT a weak D.

Nice haul. I would agree with the others that say the 09-s VDB looks like it has an added mintmark. I would get some in person opinions from dealers in your area to authenticate it. The 1922 IMO clearly shows a "D". The 55 Double Die looks to have damage. Either way I think that you did very well.image

09SVDB has an added S ....punch looks like late 30's / early 40's........09S looks good..........22 is a weak D and from all I can see from the pics the 55 looks good despite the laminated planchet. You did great image

I thought requesting, or asking if you deserved a 'You Suck' automatically took you out of the category? I was under the impression it had to be a nomination??? (not that it wasn't a bad haul for $50, though I agree with the comments on the '22 and the added 'S' to the '09 S VDB).
    I'll come up with something.

I'm not sure a 1909S-VDB and 1955 double die would slip underneath the radar, unless it wasn't in the auction description. I would say that every buyer there concluded the 1909S-VDB was a fake based on the very meager selling price, and the double die is a filler.

Of course hopefully ya got lucky and they were wrong...and for $50 ya can't go too wrong. image

The two books were a late week addition to the auction, I was the one who actually informed the auctioneer that it had the VDB and wasn't a plain 09-S, he was so happy he took it out of the album and put it into a flip and stapled it to the front cover! I think if the original auction listing had listed it was in the album there would have been more interest in the set for sure. I actually didn't even stay for the auction, I left a bid of around $400 for the set with the clerk and was informed last night that I won it and picked up the coins today. I was pretty sure the 22 was just a worn D from just looking at it yesterday. Most of the buyers were local coin "experts" who were there mainly for the silver lots- they had over 150 circulated Silver Dollars and a few GSA and non-GSA CC's that also drew alot of attention as well as some large sterling lots. The auctioneer when he handed me the books today said he thought I got one heck of a deal, he even said he tried to work the crowd to get the bids higher for the seller, but his time was limited!- lucky for me! There's a semi-local dealer who I can trust that I will probably show the coins to next week and see what he thinks- if their worth sending in for grading etc.. Meanwhile here's a close up of the date and mm on the S-VDB

I think you did VERY WELL! I don't see the 09 S VDB as having an added S. The 09 S looks good and the really good score IMO is the 55 double die. I've been to auctions where the silver guys are buying but miss out on other deals. One of my best auctions was back in 2003, I got a VF 08 S half for $5.00. It was the only half there. The buyers were all there for the Morgans... paying around $20 for fine to extra fine coins, and common dates too. Luck is preparation followed by opportunity and you got lucky!

Awesome pick up. At the very least, there is a guy on this forum who will buy all your wheats for 3.5c

I have a Whitman book since I was a kid. Needs 4 more coins.
