Does this qualify for a 'you suck' nomination or award?

Been meaning to ask this for a while, so here is the short story. At my favorite B&M dealer, I find a nice, original 1893-CC Morgan in a 2x2 flip in his row box, one coin he rarely has. Pull it out, looks Fine to me. Dealer says its 'borderline' and agrees on the Fine grade. He checks the grey sheet and sells it to me for bid of $275. It sits in my collection for 18 months or so and then I send it in to be graded. It comes back slabbed at VF-20, worth more than double what I paid for it. So, his borderline was obviously Fine or VF, not Fine or Very Good?...So, yea or nay? If not, I will just crawl back in my lurkers hole. Thanks for considering.

A small score for sure but I am pretty sure the rules state that you can't soloist for them.

Nice find but not a "you suck."

you sucks are for something truly huge--but it must be huge from others point of view--a collector may state what his experience was--but others must give the you suck. if you ask for it-its not given.
  • If you had picked it up at melt then that's worthy of a "You Suck" award.
    Wait, cancel that.

If you had picked it up at half of melt. . .

IMO it has to be huge and unsolicited. I got one when I posted this raw just after I found it in a bag of melt.

The You Suck award was kinda started by Russ, DHeath and myself many many years ago. It was a term of great respect. Like when Russ picked a $8 proof set and made a Accent Hair Kennedy in PR68DCAM (a $10,000 coin). That started us telling each other YOU SUCK!!! There are only a handfull of true YOU SUCK awards given out. We stopped doing it a bunch of years ago, when people started buying coins and flipping them for double then asking if they get a YOU SUCK!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    Nice to know the history.
So, if I find an 1895 proof Morgan in the return slot of a Coinstar machine I would be worthy of this award?
Now I know it has to be an 1895 proof, mind you. A lowly 1921 wouldn't be enough. . .

Thanks guys! Got it. It never hurts to ask. Great find on that Merc Gman, and MadMarty...what a find your bud had with that Kennedy! Thanks for the history and the comments, both are much appreciated.

I will take any small consolation prize, so thank you Bear! The 93-CC is hard to find in my price range in decent shape without the bag marks this one is notorious for; so, a nice original one in VF works well for me, and the unanticipated "upgrade" was just icing on the cake.

So, if i buy a coin for $5000 and sell it for $15000, that's a good deal.

If I buy a coin for $100 and sell it for $10000, that's a YOU SUCK!!!???

So basically you need an instant 1000x or 100,000% return. Good to know the standard!

Some of the comments in this thread indicate (to me anyway) that people do not really care about the hobby, but only how much they can flip a coin for. I think it is rather sad. This hobby should be about learning and teaching. If you make a few bucks doing it, then great.

  • Actually, the thought of finding something valuable going unnoticed is one of the things that gets a lot of us interested in coin collecting in the first place. Posting small "victories" in which daydreams of finding fortunes are realized is a way of enjoying the hobby. To get these victories, you have to have knowledge.

This may be your interpretation but I think we are learning and teaching what magnitude a "you suck" award is, or was. Not getting a "you suck" doesn't mean it wasn't a great find.

Along the same lines, learning and teaching doesn't mean we should tell someone an AU-58 is a MS-63 should we? Unless we're talking about market grading of course image

Finding an undergraded coin at a B&M dealer?

I think the defining line for "you sucks" is drawn
by percentage and not by amount of money made.

In this case, selling for or valued at 100X the purchase price (10,000%). Another example, someone I know received a YOU SUCK (from Lord Marcovan) for finding a 18th century love token (on a 1798/97 16 stars dime) valued at over $100 in a $1 junk box.

You do not suck. A true suck designation should be at least 10X purchase price.

p.s. I think you are automatically disqualified because you asked if you suck. A true you suck designation is conferred by forum members who respond to an unsolicited posting.

If you have to ask, you nalraedy know the answer. I posted a coin just to show PCGS can throw a biscut to the little man sometimes. Purchased a 1965 raw MS Kennedy for $3. Came back on the second trip as an MS 67, POP 11, valued at $2500. Also submitted a 1976-P raw Kennedy for another $3 and on the second submission, came back as a POP 1 valued at $2500. I olny submitted this info to the boards to show that it's possible for the little guy to get lucky. Not bragging. They don't deserve a "YOU SUCK!" Again, it HAS to be awarded by fellow board members. Good luck! Ray

Back about 10 years ago, I stopped in at a pawn shop on the way home from a show. Circ Morgans we about $7 each then. I guy came in with a tube of 20 circ Morgans, the guy behind the counter gave them a quick glance and offered him $7 each. He paid him, I offered the pawn guy $8 each and he sold them to me. While I was driving home I was peeking at what I got and there was a 93-S in it!! Graded VF35 at PCGS. I was feeling very sucky that day!!!

Thanks to all for the lively discussion. To scottgardener, you are absolutely correct, this is a small victory that drives us onward in this hobby. And, it is a hobby for me - the 93-CC I bought was for my collection and there is no intention of flipping it for profit. The money I make from the coins that do get flipped goes right back into another at a higher grade. With the exception of the low-ballers, I believe we are all looking for nicer coins to add to our collections - we are hunters of a different sort and it's the thrill of the hunt that keeps this hobby alive for us.

Note that I said some, not all comments. Some comments are clearly obvious they are seeking to know what qualifies as a you sucketh. Others clearly indicate the desire for only flipping.
