Sounds like an execution to me.

Robbers are the scum of the earth, but robbery is not a capital offense in the USA.

<< <i>It sounds like you think the jury always makes the correct verdict >>

Pharmacist Jerome Jay Ersland was convicted of first degree murder after three and a half hours of deliberation by an emotional jury of eight women and four men, some of whom had tears in their eyes as they responded "yes" to the judge. The pharmacist was convicted of murder for killing one of two criminals who were robbing and attempting to murder him.

To keep this coins related, with my luck if I had a coin shop I probably would have missed both robbers and been shot and killed myself. Had I not been killed, I would not have shot the perp in that manner unless he was appearing to go after a gun, which could not be seen in the video. Not enough evidence for first degree murder, IMO. >>

Funny how the story always gets exagerrated to justify the murder.

"killing one of two criminals who were robbing and attempting to murder him."............No attempted murder occured. Pointing a gun is not "attempted murder".

"But if someone comes onto your property shooting, all bets should be off."...........nobody came onto the property shooting. The "14 year old", pointed a gun. The only shots fired were by the pharmacist.

Then there's the speculation: "What isn't known is what the downed criminal was doing as he's off camera."

"She (Jennifer Parker the Assistant District Attorney) said Parker (the boy that was shot) was no longer a threat after being shot in the head. She said, “He was a 16-year-old boy lying unconscious on the floor.”

"Prosecutors told jurors in closing arguments Thursday that the evidence proves Parker never moved again after a shot to the head knocked him to the pharmacy floor. They said Ersland's own actions prove he didn't consider the wounded robber a threat when he shot him again." - as evidenced by walking past the robber back to the counter to retrieve the second gone.

For BIGE......."The second robber, Jevontai Ingram, then 14, fled. Ingram pulled out a gun inside the pharmacy but did not fire it, according to testimony. He was caught days later. He has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for his role in his friend's death. He will be released from a juvenile detention facility before his 19th birthday if he completes a treatment plan."

    Finally:

"If there was a legitimate deterrent to armed robbery we wouldn't have this problem."

There is just such a deterrent but folks refuse to use it do to their own selfish personal needs and desires.

    Its called responsibility.

Yes, this was an attempted robbery and yes crooks are the scum of the earth. But this involved two kids. Boys. Probably not even old enough to shave. The right kind of intervention by responsible adults could have prevented this from occuring and the right kind of intervention by responsible adults will prevent this from reoccuring. But, only for one.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

No question that this is very sad all the way around.

I will say however that the pointing of a gun is absolutely crystal clear justification for the person at whom the gun is being pointed to defend themselves w/lethal force. There are a LOT of very dead honest citizens who were killed by 14 year old (and younger) gang bangers. In fact, if one already has a gun pointed at them, they're already way behind the reaction time curve.

That said, I agree completely w/19Lyds that interventions - whatever they may be, youth mentoring, sports, big brother/sister, etc. - are extremely worthwhile investments for society in a great many ways. So many lives were ruined here. Perhaps had there been such intervention none of this would have happened.

What does this have to do with coins?

    A lot.

Many of those on this forum have a LOT of $ in coins. Many likely have firearms to defend themselves. Some have actually coin stores - clear targets for armed criminals.

The message here is clear: if you're going to be armed be very well trained in all aspects of the judicious use of lethal force - both legally and tactically speaking.
