Mile High results.

There was, of course, some big money spent.

I guess I'm out of the loop when it comes to '69 Topps baseball but the price for this '69 PSA 9 Seaver really shocked me. I had no IDEA this card was worth that kind of money.

Other interesting items-

1979-80 O Pee Chee SCG 98 Gretzky rookie.

1968 Topps test "plaks" with Mantle.

1957 game worn Stan Musial uniform.

1976 Topps baseball vending case

And per my earlier post about BGS being busy with OPC hockey, a hoard of '70s and '80s OPC sheets.

Wow. That Seaver price is insane. Someone really wanted that card !! Awesome news for the seller.

That Seaver card sure seems high to me.

I wonder what the winner will do on the vending case. That is 600 a box which also seems high. I know there is a premium for the security of knowing that they are in a sealed case, but as sure as you open the case there goes the premium.

hmmmmmmmm...........almost 7 grand for that Seaver, huh? i believe i suggested to another 69er here recently that the card was undervalued, perhaps not quite so much after that auction......now i'm even more in love with my PSA 8. image

edit to add speculation: the card is either undersized T/B or trimmed.....break out the pitchforks.
  • I tried to get the 1935 Chicle set but it went for an outrageous amount. I picked up a few lots:

    1935 Chicle Rentner PSA 7
    1951 Parkhurst Howe PSA 3

That SEAVER is a nice card (and I do collect Seaver), but I would almost think that it was a mistake! In the past 3.5 years the highest listed on VCP is $1,095.10 from a Mile High auction in Feb 2008. In addition, only one other time did the card break the ONE GRAND mark. Am I missing something here?

I bid on 5 items and got nothing. Watched a '69 Bobby Cox in PSA 9 pass $300 and saw a '48 Leaf Spahn in PSA 8 go over $2k. Also saw a '91 Desert Shield Chipper SGC 98 pass $1,000. All 3 seemed well outside the norm. Maybe the card market is hot again or maybe I just ended up singling out the wrong items to bid on.

I find it extremely hard to find value in any of these auctions. What I frequently find are the cards of my dreams, perfectly centered, going for 2x-3x what I expect them to sell for.

I won a non sport item, which I was surprised was so cheap...the 1980 Creature Feature lot with two wax boxes and 24 GAI graded packs...got the two boxes and the packs for less than I've seen one box advertised for on ebay and slightly more than what I saw a single box sell for recently. Not everyone's cup of tea but I'm putting the set and sticker set together graded and these will help..... al.

Check out the recent closing levels on an 89 Bowman Tiffany Griffey PSA 8 and 84 Fleer Update Kirby Puckett PSA 9.

There are certain card prices that are going up. The bear market has ended in many cards.

There may not be some wild bull market but semi rare cards are moving up in price.

I bid on a few items, but didn't win any. I compared some prices to recent eBay sales (from reputable sellers) and MHCC seemed high! For example, the 1960 partial set (lot #1490) sold for $4.00 a card and recent eBay sales are closer to $1.00 - $2.00 in comparable grade...

  • thank you for stating that you though the sgc is nicer...
to me, the rough cut is super important....
I thought the sgc was nicer that the psa in this case...
both are pop 1's...this card almost always has centering issues....
I thought the psa 10 went off low, should have been more like a $120K card...
I'm pretty happy with the 63K purchase....
I'll bring to the national so people can hold.....

Long term the Gretzky is going up. Your version is very strong.

That is a tremendous card and congratulations.

    any ideas why not ?

Valid question, but could have been lots of things. I wonder if the sellers of some of the high-end merchandise that was featured had negotiated the advertising as part of their agreement to allow MH to handle the sale.

Can sheets be rolled that tight, it seems like those boxes are kind of narrow.

Seems like a really strong auction, what happened to the "recession"? That 69 Seaver was amazing. And the OPC Gretzky rookie is incredible.

I'm not knocking Rick for his purchase - I know how damn rare that card is in top condition - but, man, it just seems out of whack that a 1979/80 card could be almost twice as much as a game-worn uniform from Stan Musial. I know, demand and all that image

Great purchase, Rick. Put me in the "SGC one was better than the PSA" camp as well.

If an Albert Pujols card can sell for $8,000, then a Wayne Gretzky rookie in absolutely stunning condition is a steal at $63,000.

That card is an investment piece and will go much higher long term. If there were 10 cards graded Gem Mint then perhaps things would be different but this is the best of the best of a super tough issue and Wayne Gretzky will go down in history as one of the best if not the best hockey players.

I have never watched one hockey game and I would love to own a PSA 9 O-pee-chee rookie so that is why this card is so expensive.

  • Wayne Gretzky will go down in history as one of the best if not the best hockey players.
==> Gretzky is almost 1000 points ahead of messier who is #2 all time...
or look at it this way: Greztky has 894 career goals, if he NEVER scored 1 goal, he'd still be the leagues all time leader !!!
    ALL TIME NHL LEADERS

take the all time greats: Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Willie Mays, Jim Brown, Wayne Gretzky

I think you can argue Gretzky is greater than them all....Bryan Trottier is #15 on the all-time list and Greztky has MORE than double his career points...

Lets not get crazy here. I would place Gretzky (maybe) at the same level as Jordan, but certainly not higher. At the top of MJ's game, he had no peers. He was a man among boys, doing whatever he wanted too, whenever he wanted to do it. And that level of dominance continued in the NBA for a long, long time. He then carried that dominance onto the World Stage and led perhaps the most dominant team that the summer olympics have ever seen. Their level of dominance in their respective sport was similar, but I think Jordan's popularity was broader. Too bad OPC didn't put out a rough cut basketball set in 86.

You guys gotta be kidding me if you think that either Gretzky or Jordan are bigger than Babe Ruth. Ruth introduced the power game to baseball, and he had more HRs than entire teams at some points. I'm not as familiar with hockey, but even Jordan didn't have that big of an impact on basketball. You can argue that Wilt had a greater impact on his sport since the free throw lane was widened just because of him. Frankly, I think the most telling aspect is that if you look at the major auction catalogues, I would guess that roughly 7 out of 10 have Ruth on the cover, and you never see Jordan or Gretzky there.
  • hey ,
I did list Babe Ruth as the greatest baseball player of all-time...
However, did he play against Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell,
Judy Johnson, etc... ?? How many dingers would have Gibson hit ?
yes Ruth changed the game and he's MORE popular but...
    ----------
Gretzky is a mind boggling 1000 points ( basically ) ahead of #2 on the career scoring list...and he married Janet Jones !!

The market knows there are two Gem Mint copies and your version has much better centering.

I don't think you can lose but it may bring down the value of the PSA version. With your card being better and basically a 1/3 cheaper you are safe.

By making the PSA version a Pop 2 it could certainly hurt it's appreciation potential longer term and I would be very concerned if I owned the PSA 10 of your's joining it.

I think you got a very good deal as that card is AWESOME!

With Wayne landing Janet Jones he gets some huge bonus points for sure!

Jordan had NO peers during his playing years. None. No one was close. Ruth on the other hand....Go look up the results of the '36 Hall of Fame ballot and you'll find your answer. You talk as if Ruth was miles ahead of everyone else. Yet there are great debates all the time about the greatest baseball player of all time- Many (Ruth's contemporaries included) would put Cobb ahead of Ruth. But with Jordan, there really isn't much of an argument to be made that he wasn't the greatest at his sport.

Rick- Sorry this is turning into major threaddrift. Your card deserves its own thread to bask in its glory.
