Credit card industry? I suppose if you don't pay your bill in full every month and pay the exorbitant interest rate, that might qualify. Otherwise it's difficult to function these days without a credit card. But what is more troubling is the sentiments expressed on this thread that what the hotels buyers do is acceptable. It is not, it never was and it never will be, any more than insider trading or Ponzi schemes are. Hotel buyers are no different is spirit than Bernie Madoff.
<< <i>A couple of days later our ad rep came by to tell us about the screaming mad phone call they got from the hotel guys. Oh, just for fun we sent one of our young guys over with a raw AU 1914-D Lincoln. As I recall, they offered him $150 for it. >>
Tempting, but I'd be afraid the guy would want to "Show it to his manager" in another room to talk about it and pop out later, offering you $7 for your 1913 cent.

If everyone paid off their bill each month, there would be no credit card industry.
I suspect that most here do not believe that what the hotel buyers do is acceptable. I certainly do not. However, it takes both a buyer and a seller. Most of the people who sell to the hotel buyers do so willingly. They have the freedom to make their own decisions, even if the decisions are stupid.
Is it really the job of you, me, or anyone else [including government] to tell persons who make stupid decisions that they "ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS"; or alternatively to step in after the fact and take action to rescue the person who made a stupid decision from the consequences flowing from their stupid decision?

I'm not advocating not allowing people to "make their own decisions". I do, however, advocate a level playing field and would readily support regulating the gonifs who would prey on an unsuspecting public. YMMV
Bobbo50, just so i'm clearly understood, i don't agree with what these types of buyers do, either in the prices they pay or the tactics that they use.
however, if your misguided inference hinged on one word you should perhaps examine that somewhat. had i said BUT and followed it with an excuse i could see your point. what i said was simply "but" followed by a suggestion that perhaps the OP had grossly understated how much these guys pay to advertise. i was merely linking two thoughts.
that's OK, though, my reputation here is safe and i'm sort of used to being misunderstood.
I think a lot of you folks have the wrong idea! If these guys told people what there coins were worth and than gave them their lousy offer I wouldn't have a problem. What most of you guys are failing to realize is they go to a one month university where they learn how to convince people that the coins or scrap jewelry is fake! That I have a problem with! They flat-out lie and its against the law!
There's an ad in this week's NN from an anonymous company looking to hire people to staff these hotel events. Travel 14-20 days at a time, 10 times a year. It pays $150-$300 a day. They keep re-running the ad because they can't find enough people (as stated in the ad itself).

If you think the interest rate is exorbitant, you have every right to not apply for a credit card with that company.

Who will level the field and how? You have asserted that these people are not capable of making their own decisions.
Once they have been identified, perhaps we will need to take a closer look into their affairs to protect them from other threats.
