Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I was wondering if any of the detectives on the board thought it was legit. The seller has almost no selling history and this is the only item listed.
I also figured a card of this magnatude would be run through a big time auction house.

I would assume it is much higher then the current bid.

A PSA 5 sold here at REA for 41k + buyer prem

So to be perfectly honest, with that big of a difference between 2 5's, your guess is as good as mine. The big boys are playing for a card that doesn't come up very often and I think is believed to be Ruth's RC, I think this will end somewhere in the 40k range.

I recognized the seller's name from a while ago, and I Googled his name. The very first thing I came across was a post from 2004 that said "all I'm basically down to now is the Ruth RC."

PS Its NOT a Sporting News card, its a M101-4/5...... Sporting News is just one of many backs these cards came with....
Ruth like almost every other player in set(s) is found with 20+ different backs, and the Ruth card is just as common as any other card in the set(s).
There are 2 separate sets
they are known within the hobby as 1916 M101-4 or 1916 M101-5 (2 different sets, numbering is slightly different between the 2 with some different players mixed in, but some players also have the same numbers between the 2 sets so its sometimes impossible to know the exact set they are from.... ie Ruth (always #151)
They are sometimes referred to as "1916 M101-4/5 Felix Mendelsohn"
Felix Mendelsohn was the Chicago Printing Firm that printed the cards up for the individual companies that wanted them.
BACKS... the M101-4/5 cards can be found with ....
Anonymous (blank back)
The Sporting News (only M101-4 numbering known)
Altoona Tribune (Altoona, Penn.)
Block & Kuhl Co. (Peoria, Ill.)
Burgess-Nash Clothiers (Omaha, Neb.)
*Everybody's (unknown)
Famous-Barr Clothiers (St. Louis)
Gimbels (New York)
The Globe Clothing (St. Louis)
Green Joyce (unknown)
Herpolsheimer Co. (Grand Rapids, Mich.)
*Holmes to Homes Bread (unknown)
Indianapolis Brewing Co. (Indianapolis)
Mall Theatre (unknown)
Morehouse Baking Co. (Lawrence, Mass.)
*Noon-Day Cafeteria (St. Paul, Minn.)
Standard Biscuit Co. (San Francisco)
*Successful Farming (Des Moines, Iowa)
Ware's (New Rochelle, NY)
H. Weil Baking Co. (New Orleans)
* = extremely rare back
(a couple brands have variations on the back so there really are more than 20 dif backs)
In general, the (oldschool) term Sporting News for this set shouldnt be used since most cards of this design have no connection to the magazine at all.... unless you are actually looking for one with a Sporting News back (limiting yourself drastically) ........then the set is 1916 M101-4 Sporting News
The M101-4/5 Ruth will be very pricey though, as expected, but far from the $$ the extremely rare 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth goes for...
Dont buy a raw card, 99%++ are fake!
Also of note (see link below) PSA has graded reprints before as authentic
PSA graded "doctored reprint"
PSA is a complete joke... I'll leave it at that...

<< <i>This auction is legit? Does the font on the flip look off to anyone else? >>
The flip font on the ebay card matches the flip font on the card in the Goodwin auction.

Read this and judge for yourself if the flip is legit or not
I say the flip is legit.

Wouldn't you hate it if you were one of the bidders and a ZERO FEEDBACK bidder bumped the price by Three Grand???

<< <i>right now little over 25 K from a bidder with zero FB >>
Earlier I made reference to this zero feedback bidder. HOWEVER, the more I see these types of bidders the more I think that MAYBE some of the big boys don't want people to know they are bidding and they set up a new name just to bid on this one card. Any thoughts?

<< <i>Card just ended at 28K. Funny thing about the card was that it had a hidden reserve of 15K and a buy it now of 25K. It took 2-3 days for the card to hit 15K, and once it hit that amount, the buy it now disappeared. So if the winning buyer had just did the Buy It Now early in the auction, they could have saved themselves 3K. >>
Not true
If you look at the Bidder List
The winner never bid on the card until the very end May-16-11 18:36:15 PDT. I bet the winner of the card never even seen the BIN.
