found in change yesterday

I have casually collected coins a little bit over the years. I know some basics, but not much. Here is a question I could not answer, although I think the answer is not positive.

My daughter works in a hotel in DC, and the coffee shop opened a roll of nickels yesterday, and out pops an 1865 two cent coin. From her description it meets an EF-40 grade, except the coin is stamped with the letters EK.

I'm guessing that the EK stamping is not good condition wise?

Also, I have a coin book from about 10 years ago, which indicates an 1865 two cent coin is worth about $30 in EF-40 condition (without the stamping). Is that about the same now?

Thanks in advance for any help;

Jack

  • Sounds like a merchants counter stamp , i cant help but wonder how a 2c piece ever fitted in a nickel roll though.

    Wow cool find, and post pics if you can.
    If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?
  • Thanks the info.

    Visiting my daughter today, and will try to bring the coin home and scan. Will also get nickel roll story details.

    Thanks;

    neat find. post some pics if you can, wed love to see them
  • Thanks the comments.

    I have the coin now.

    First, the "roll of nickels" was not seen by my daughter, she was only told that the coin came out of a "roll" of coins opened by the a coffee shop barista that morning. It's almost the size of a quarter, so it likely was a quarter roll, not nickels.

    Embarrassed to say I'm not bright enough on the computer to figure out scanning, even thought this computer is amazing (Alien Ware), so I will have my wife, who's knows everything "teckie", make me a scan.

    Is it possible to research this "EK" merchant stamp?

    Thanks your interest;
    Jack

    SavoySpecial is one of the forums' "counter-stamped" guys. Maybe he'll see this thread and give you more information.
  • Thanks for the tip.

    Although this is certainly a little out of my area of expertise, I could not help but be intrigued by the two cent piece your daughter found in a roll of coins. I had hoped to be a little bit of help by presenting the following website Counterstamps on US coins, which lists 13,500 known merchant counterstamps as listed in the Brunk counterstamp book. Unfortunatelty, "EK" is not listed among them. Perhaps JamesMurray is correct, that it was a merchant's counterstamp, but it could also have been a jeweler practicing with letter punches. Neat find, whatever the source.

  • Thank you for that counter stamp link, which is an incredible list. Kinda dissappointing not to se a EK listed.

    Much appreciated nevertheless.
