My dad almost got choked up the other day watching me crack open Mint Product!

I'll spare you the long background, but let's just say that for most of my life using tools for me was like 99.99% of the people trying to add 15, two-digit numbers in their head in under a minute.

My dad was a tool and die maker, and when he tried to teach me how to use tools and build things, I came up with this BS excuse that I was going to be a millionaire some day and all of the "little people" will do that for me. I guess I am in good company with all of those little people.

So my dad was at my office after I purchased a deal loaded with Mint product to which the silver coins had to be liberated. As I was removing the coins with precision, he tells me that he could now die a happy man because he never thought he would see the day that I could use simple tools without impaling myself!

In reality, he was very proud of me. However, I was even more proud of myself. I did not use my Asperger's as an excuse. I looked at it very simply (which I often have a hard time doing): If I had to get my leg chopped off, I could either sit on my ass or learn how to walk with a prosthetic. I chose option #2.

Not that I enjoy doing that all friggin' day, but every job has its stuff. Lately, this is what many of us are doing.

Yes, but I was also using pliers and tin snips, and had the wherewithall to come up with an optimal technique.

He was also amazed that I bought my own pair of safety glasses! For those of you who don't know me, we can do amazing things that most people cannot, but we also have a really hard time at doing things that most people can.

I'm not Rainman, but I did memorize (and still can do at 44) a 30-times table.
  • Neat story, thanks for sharing, it is a wonderful feeling when you can make your parents happy. Mine are both gone but I still remember the joy of bringing them happiness!
