I have two 1945P DDR Jefferson nickels, one MS and the other circulated. Does it make sense to slab

The MS coin was in a Whitman 1938-1961 Jefferson nickel album of MS coins I picked up some years back. The circulated coin was in a stash of way nickels I collected as a kid. The MS coin is very nice and would probably grade at least a 64. The steps are present but I have no idea if it would FS. The circulated coin is probably between a F15 and VF25.

Does it make sense to slab them and seek to have the varieties listed on the holder? If they were slabbed by a top tier TPG at the grades mentioned above, what is a realistic value for same?

It would depend alot on which of the 3 varieties you have. Grab a cherrypickers guide and get an FS number on them

I would send in the mint state DDR. The circulated one would be a waste of $ if you planned to sell.
It also depends on the DDR, as there are I believe three different ones with varying values.

The last time I looked at the two coins and compared them with the information in Cherrypickers, my understanding was that both coins were the variety that has the most dramatic doubling (I forget the FS #). I will have to check again, maybe tonight.

I would not bother getting the circulated coin graded, but the mint state coin will interest registry collectors for sure. You stated that both are FS-030 which has much more prominent doubling. Here are some reference photos.

I don't have a photo of the FS-030.5 but the pickup points are very similar to the 1939 QDR.

Your pictured FS-030 is what each of my two nickels look like. A very wide separation of lettering on "....CELLO" and "CENTS".

    Thanks.

The BU example is definitely grade worthy! We'd love to see pictures!

    the ms65fs above

should not be labeled full steps

some people need to get their act together, I hate seeing them pump out
examples like that. Gives the wrong idea, and usually they are good in this arena.

I think you are overreacting a little. I take all of my photos with a casino chip placed under the bottom of the slab in order to angle it slightly into the light source. The steps under the 2nd pillar don't look nearly as bad in hand under a glass as they do in that photo, and it certainly isn't deserving of "a get your act together" comment about the other TPG. Having said that, the coin is very fortunate to be sitting in a FS holder. Personally, I don't think the FS designation has much effect on the value considering the coin is a variety.
