Ebay Question: What do you do

if you received an order for coins for a couple thousand dollars from someone with zero transaction history and who just signed up a couple days ago?

What can you do to not accept the order?

idk, i'd feel fine with the transaction if their payment (paypal or money order, something like that) cleared.

I'd ask them when they would meet me at my local airport. image

    research their address.

    do they own?

    if so, for how long?

is it a mail box store address?

Looks like a house but no listed phone. The order is for raw coins.

If they pay via Paypal and you ship with a signature (I'd ship with Restricted Delivery).

    Restricted Delivery
Be sure your mail gets into the right hands.
When you want your mail to reach a specific recipient, use Restricted Delivery. This service can only be used in conjunction with certain services requiring a recipient signature such as Certified Mail™, Insured Mail over $200, or Registered Mail™.

Get the guys signature on the delivery slip.

I'd follow the ebay and paypal rules and do the transaction (sounds like they won, right?).
Everyone starts somewhere and if you follow the rules, you should be fine.

What if someone walked into a B&M you own. You've never seen them before and they want to purchase a raw coin for several thousand dollars?
Do you sell to them? What if they want to pay with a check? What if they want to pay with a CC (and you already accept CCs)?

Same thing with ebay and paypal. Make sure all communication is through the ebay system. Make sure they are confirmed (Paypal) and that you have all the mail requirements that you need. Ship it registered and only to the person and the address listed. Etc etc.

If the only question is to "not accept the order", then don't sell on ebay, seriously, as there are always new folks signing up on ebay to buy stuff.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Yeah, the guys with stores are saying that newbies are flooding in to buy bullion...maybe it's the same on eBay.

As long as you wait till the payment clears, it's all good.

Everything is fine until they file a SNAD - but anyone can do that. SNAD = Signifigantly Not As Described.

Buyers can claim non-receipt of items or that the item they received is not what they ordered (such as a box of rocks rather than a box of gold). PayPal will do a chargeback. Very little you can do to protect yourself against that.

I'd check on how I had my eBay buyer preferences set again.

As long as the paypal details pages says "eligible" for seller protection and "OK to ship," your covered. I'd send registered with electronic return receipt. The electronic return receipt is like signature confirmation but cheaper and with no forms. Just order it at the counter when you submit the registered insured package. The electronic return receipt satisfies paypal requirements because they (and you) can see the signature on line by using the registered tracking number.

my biggest fear is when they want to return the item and when you open the package, they shipped back a rock with the same weight.

Tell them to come see me, carlsbadeagletrader. If I don't have what they want, I know where to find it. --jerry

Find a local, to the buyer, coin dealer to act as a middle man or your agent....

send the dealer the coin and have the buyer go to him with cash, or a Paypal payment and pick up the coins...

Have the buyer sign an acceptance letter you can later show.

may cost some juice but..... peace of mind might be worth it

  • I had a similiar concern a couple of years back.

Sold a platinum proof is a user with 0 feedback, registration= brand new. Waited for payment, contacted buyer, waited some more. Got a couple of emails "I can't figure out how to pay, etc..." , thought I was getting scammed.

Finally ended up calling him - an older gentleman who wasn't very computer savy. Walked him through the steps, etc with Paypal and the sale was a sucess.

Ended up doing multiple transactions with him.

As a previous poster mentioned, got to start somewhere!

  • If you are really concerned and have that bad feeling about the buyer for some reason or another, cancel the sale. There are quite a few crooks operating on Ebay, but they only get to rip off a few people before they are identified and booted, but you dont want to be the person that helped identify the crook and be tied up in the ensuing mess and dealing with Eaby.

I also check property tax records if available.

I feel a bit safer knowing the person owns and has been there for a while.

I sold a sealed box of 100 2010 ASE silver proof coins to a 0 feedback buyer on a BIN auction who had registered within a day. I shipped it the next day, restricted delivery. No problems. If you're going to sell, you have to be willing to ship.
