What would be a price for a barely readable 1901-S Barber quarter?

Date is all there but the mintmark is almost imaginary. No problems other than just wear. Obverse is an AG-3 Reverse is F-2

A dealer near me has one but for what seems a reasonable price. I would love to plug it in my LOC album

I usually avoid coins with an "almost imaginary mintmark".

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

My advice to you is dont buy it.

If it is imaginary, then imagine it not there at all. I would not buy it-slabbed or not. I promise you, you will be sorry you bought it a few years down the road when you try to sell it and no one else but you can imagine a mint mark being there.

If it fits the look of the rest of the coins in the album, I would consider it.

However, I would never buy a C or D mint gold coin with a weak MM.

You are all probably right. The best point is RYK's in that it wont match the rest of the album. Price was $500 which is a fraction of good bid.

$500 is probably a fair price for that grade. If you get it in plastic, it would bring in more than that.

If you can make out the mm without a doubt, 500$ is a buy.

I would say buy it...if you don't like it, I would bet $100 it will sell on the BST in an hour for more than that (assuming you list it during daylight hours). image

    That's a great price. I would venture a 3/2 is about a 1500 dollar coin, tops.
Unfortuntely they are not scarce enough to justify their pricing structure in G4 and below.
And yet there they are all day long.

If it slabs even in a genuine holder, it's probably worth more than $500

Really have to wonder why a dealer iswilling to give up so much money on it if it would slab?

I would pay $500 for it with the contingency that it would slab either "Genuine" or "graded". Buyer would only be out the fees, not the $500 if it wouldn't. A slabbed "Genuine" 01-S would probably bring $1500 minimum on eBay. A lot of collectors looking to fill that hole in their collection.

If it takes a bit of imagination to see it, you'll be imagining it is for the rest of your life.
