Beautiful toning. I don't grade Jeffs - the reverse seems to mushy for MS 66 or 67 to me. Are the 39s known for a mushy strike? Thanks for sharing the coin!

  • It's an MS66. Obverse strike is pretty good, center columns of Monticello though are soft for the date. I got this one for the toning, but I will say that the fields on this one are excellent, pretty much MS67 quality, and that combined with the toning merits the MS66 in my opinion.

Hey I have one from the same roll. I would say 67 on yours since yours looks nicer than mine.

What is the difference between the 38 and 39 reverse. Could they be shown side by side?

    I love varieties!image

    Great coin! Congratulations!

Is the spot at 10 o'clock near the rim on the reverse on the coin or just the image?

The top riser is thicker on the Rev of 40 and the steps have a defined start and end with a vertical line. The Reverse of 38 is often described as having wavy steps. The 38 is shown on the left and 40 on the right. Some day I am going to update my example photos to full steppers, just too lazy!

To the OP, I think PCGS was a little harsh on that coin. Based on that image, I see nothing that would prevent it from an MS67 There are some very minor marks on the reverse which is a little mushy, but the obverse is pristine, very lustrous, and incredibly attractive. That coin would certainly grade MS67* at NGC. Here is my NGC MS67, it is also my avatar.

Thanks LH96. I could see the differences in your pics.

I wish I had the money to collect more series! Jeffs would be one.

Love the '39-Ds folks! image Seems as though there are many nice toned examples of this date. I have a nice rim toned MS 63 in my dansco.
