I need VAM help!!!

If an 1897-o Morgan has a die crack on the reverse from the star all across the top of UNITED, and extending to the O of ONE, does that make it a vam 6a, even if there is no die crack by the mintmark? Some question, huh?

I have to know!!!

An die crack does not make a VAM. Many tens of millions of Morgan dollars have common die cracks.

I could not get the pics to come up into larger view that you told me about. However the two links below should answer your question. My understanding is that the VAM 6A is the same as the VAM 6 except the VAM 6A has the more extensive die breaks. So as long as the diagnostics match such as the high tilted to the right mint mark, doubled wreath, etc you have a VAM 6 becasue the die breaks have not fully ocurred yet. Hope this helps.

From my experiences and examples I have collected, the crack to the mint mark happens prior to the full crack by the star to the left. Please post pics and I am sure someone will be able to attribute. Jim
