<< <i>very scary, wouldn't coins in the new NGC slabs be easy to detect sandwich coins since you can see the edges vs the PCGS slabs in which you can't see the sides? >>

Yep. And I hear they have online photo verification as well.
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

<< <i>add 18041741 to the growing list of fake slab labels. 1916-D PCGS XF40 >>

So how is someone to know it's a fake slab? When you type in the cert. # it comes back like any other coin verification. And also, does this mean that there's legitamite '16-D xf-40 out there w/ the same slab #?

  • Yes. But who would buy that one without getting it checked first.
  • One for the age old Raw Vs Slabbed debate perhaps , presumably had this coin been raw it would have been quite obvious its sandwiched ? That being the case , if it is the case , the scam only worked because of the slab.
  • PlacidPlacid Posts: 11,299 ✭✭✭
Are you sure pcgs said it is a fake slab?
Dosent fit the china fake catagory imho.
Seems to me a sandwiched coin would be more likely to be put in as a replacement for a original coin in a pcgs holder and the seller keeps the genuine coin.
  • They sent me a letter.

    It was a fake:

    Slab
    Coin
    And paper insert

I'm way late in viewing this thread, but if you look at the position on the mint mark compared to the "real" coin that was posted a few down from the original, you can see the difference. I think this positioning is spelled out in the counterfeit detection books also.

Sorry for you problem and disappointment.

if the seller did not want to refund even in light of the evidence, I'd neg him.

otherwise do what you feel is best.

my response would be entirely dependent upon the actions of the seller.

I haven't given a neg in years; but, I believe you have to give this seller a neg in order to protect others from buying fakes.

As for myself, I am not going to buy any coins on Ebay again (unless I weaken) because I've bought two 16D Mercs and both were fake-but I did get my mony back on both! I've bought a few Wheaties and sent them in for slabbing and some were cleaned which irritates me to no end. But I did buy a replica 1909-s VDB and I gave it to a friend at a wedding and he immediately put it in his pocket without looking and later called dme and asked me what grade I thought it was....he was good natured when I told him it was a fake. The best way to avoid getting a fake coin I've learned after trial and error is the US Mint. I am not as good as a lot of you guys that can pick out or smell a replica on Ebay, it's beyond me.

  • Look, I just come here and read the posts. Haven't posted over here. I'm fairly active on ebay. I don't understand the reluctance to post appropriate feedback. If I sold you that coin, thinking it was real, and was informed it was fake, you would have a refund instantly. The seller did the wrong thing not refunding you. Why are you so hesitant.

Feedback is for more than "if the seller knew it was real". Feedback should reflect the service. How did he handle this? Was it a positive experience for you?

Stairman has an excellent first post. I agree with him and would neg the seller just because he balked at the refund if nothing else.

    I just read this thread.

    SHOCKING

I am wondering if the new game in town is to buy a legit key coin in a legit holder then fake the coin and insert it in a replacement holder with the old cert # so everything looks OK and legit.

sell the new fake on ebay or the bourse and keep the real key raw and a person could create a lot of value fast for him/herself.

BY THE WAY, I find it odd that JULIUS350 can't remember where he bought such a coin. You'd have a hard time convincing me that he's not part of this.
    Have a nice day
  • IMO,

This is a fake slab. Look at the concentric cicles. Slghtly different sizes and bevels.

Now, let's see if I can post a pic.

  • I contacted the buyer of the $7300 coin, and never heard back.

"if it was fake, neg him and report him"

Exactly. He has (70) feedback. If these 2 buyers would neg him, it would help keep other buyers from going through the same thing.
I notice the OP hasn't left a neg.

    Disappointing.

I can't think of a more negative experience than that, unless you'd lost your money too. The coin has a unique appearance and IMO there would be NO REASON to deny an immediate refund under the situation. I have no idea why he wanted more information. With the unique appearance of the coin there was no chance of you pulling a 'switch' and sending back a different coin. If he was truly innocent in the whole deal, he should have been very apologetic and IMMEDIATELY offered a refund and to pay your return postage. That's my opinion anyway and the way I think anyone interested in preserving their reputation would have handled it. I'm just now reading this thread for the first time so I don't know if you've already left your feedback, but I would have left a negative under these circumstances.

Update again: Seller said he bought if from someone else and, consequently, couldn't find the the other person who he bought it from. He ask for more to refund. After waiting a week, he still needs more time. I filed a case with ebay and was refunded via paypal by the ruling of the case. How would you handle his feedback? I hat giving negs or neutrals, but does this warrant it? Or just jeave it alone >>

Negative on selling a fake and not IMMEDIATELY refunding you. No excuses.
