I Met a Court Reporter in Orange County with the name of. . .

Penny Nickels. I swear, that is what her name plate read in traffic court. I'm sitting there thinking of coin collecting rather than the serious fine I was facing if convicted.
Have you met anyone in your life with a name that makes you think of your hobby?

Wonder if this was the same Penny Nickels I met in El Cajon in 1991. El Cajon is in San Diego County just south of Orange County for those of you that don't know Southern California. I posted concerning the one I met years ago on this board.

I have heard that name before. If I am not mistaken she had a sister named Ura Pigg. My mother used to tell this story when I was a kid 50 years ago.

In our old (small) Accounting department, one manager was named Steve Spiss (but when you say it, it sounds like Steve's Piss).

And, our A/P guy was named Richard Kokx (Dick Kokx).

Kind of funny since there were only about 5 people on the whole Accounting team.

I knew a Harry Pitts, a chiropractor from Dallas named Dr. Bonebrake and a girl named Holly Hill.
  • I hope she doesn't meet and marry Dime Quarters!

And there is a 32 y.o. male in NY with that exact name, how old did she look? Ring on her finger? Hooking them up would be cooler than the dog tag track down or the mission to find the yap stone money in the NJ backyard!

I knew a woman whose name was Kim Ode.
  • Years ago, one of my favorite bank tellers was Muffin Baker. At work, we had a Rose Plante. Both of these were married names. There used to be bill boards in New Hampshire advertising Cornelius Dollarhide, tax accountant.

I Googled this one too. The story my mother told me was of Texas Govenor (around 1892) Jim Hogg's daughter Ima Hogg. They used to travel with a friend of his daughter and he would introduce them as his daughters, Ima and Ura. Google went on to say Ima disputed this story in later years.

When I was in law school I worked as a law clerk for the local County Counsel's Office. I was asked by one of the staff attorneys to go across the street to the courthouse to pick up a transcript of a hearing from the court reporter who worked the hearing. The attorney told me the name of the court reporter to speak with.

So I went to meet the court reporter. He gave me his business card. It had his name on it. I coul dnot believe the guy's name. Worse than what was describedin the Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue".

The longer, more formal name of the court reporter was "Harold Richard". Of course he did not go by Harold Richards. He went by the shorter version of "Harold" and the shorter version of "Richard" and had a harsh, challenging look on his face that dared anyone to make any comment about his name.

Unbelievable. I would have been so mad at my parents if they had given me that name and I would have immediately petitioned for a name change as soon as I turned 18.

I used to belong to the Upstate New York chapter of the National Cartoonists Society.

One of the elder statesmen of the group was an accomplished gag cartoonist and educator. Whenever there was occasion for him to stand up and introduce himself to a group, he would begin with, "Hello, my name is Ford Button --- and nobody believes it."

    Always got a laugh.

A consummate gentleman and a great teacher who inspired many illustrators and cartoonists before he died too young, at 69.

An article 10 years ago in the Des Moines Register about Ruan Trucking discussed the different aspects of maintenence requirements. The Maintenance Dept Supervisor's name?

    Harry Beaver

I sent the article to the Leno show to see if they would feature it on Monday Night Headlines, but I don't know if they ever did.

When I was a kid in western Carolina our dentist was Dr Break and the family doctor was Dr Clapp.

At a company I worked at in the early 80's there was a Dick Wooly. Of course in the company phone listings, last name came first.

And once in the Marines when I was selected to audit the enlisted club with some other unfortunate souls. We had to sign a sign in sheet and leave our military ID on the table. I didn't believe the name above mine so I looked at the ID. Lucky 7, not the word seven. He must have hit a jackpot and made this decision after celebrating.
Alright! Who removed the cork from my lunch?
