My trip into the attic today.

So, I went to my attic looking for something(never found it and it seems a 10 hour investment of time would be required...some other time)...anyway, I found a bunch of junk foreign coins from when I was a kid. I decided to pull the stuff down to see if there was any silver in the mix. There is stuff in there from 1877 to 1985 or so. A bunch of crap really. One coin stood out...and it was NOT foreign.....

1877 DIME! AG-3/G-4 Details with a few bad scratches....one thin dime.

I wish there was an easy way to way to tell if stuff had silver in it. I pulled out all of the brown coins. I ran a magnet over all of the rest....that sucked up another 20 coins or so...next is to pull out the obvious aluminum ones...then I will have to look up each coin 1 by 1 on the internet to find out the composition of the rest...UGH! There are about 100 coins to go through. Good times.

Go to your local library and get a copy of the Krause catalog. This will tell you if a coin is silver, its fineness, and actual silver weight.

I have sorted the coins by country/denomination when I could. I have a bunch of piles and then a bunch of 1 offs. Google will be my friend tonight when I attempt to complete this task. However, I have found 4 SILVER CANADIAN QUARTERS so far....melt is $27.10 right now...just for those four. Yipppeeeee.

I have a bunch of those Mexican "un pesos" which I bought along with a large lot many years ago, and always figured they were 90% silver...turns out they are only 10% silver. image

    Oh well...LOL
