"Unusual" State Quarter - Louisiana (2002)

If any of you "modern" folks would spare a minute to help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Today in change I got a 2002-D Louisiana state quarter. The coin doesn't quite look like a regular circulation strike - it's a little too "white" (but not as white as a 90% silver coin); in addition, the edge is white (no red, no shade of grey like a 40% Kennedy).

The coin doesn't ring when dropped on a hard surface, but it doesn't quite "clunk" like a regular clad quarter.

Did the Mint make 40% silver state quarters for Mint Sets?

What is this coin?

Thanks

interesting, you'd think with the existence of 90% silver coins, there'd be no market for these... I guess anything can be hucked.

As long as people are willing to watch "shopping networks" all day and spend their life savings, there will always be a market.

I'm inclined to believe it might be one of those platinum-plated quarters that are sold on TV. Someone probably spent it after realizing how worthless they are.

I found a few gold plated HSN pieces in change, and I've put some into circulation too. I don't see why a plated platinum piece wouldn't appear at sometime.

I received a California quarter in change. The edge has no copper layer. I assume it's one of those shop at home coins.
