Proof like, worth the premium or not, adams edge lettering error

I'm a big presidential dollar error collector. I've been offered a John Adams double lettering edge proof like error (ngc ms65) for $250. Typically, ngc adams double lettering edge errors in 65 grade go for around $75. The seller claims he has never seen a proof like in the adams double lettering edge errors and neither have I. Unfortunately, there is no breakdown in the ngc or pcgs pop reports on the amount of proof like errors that have been graded. Does it seem like it is worth the $180 premium to pay for the proof like coin and label?

If it's labeled PL I'd snap it up quickly! NGC has graded 26,078 J. Adams coins across all categories. They've graded only 14 PL or DMPL across all categories. That's a serious conditional rarity in NGC plastic anyways. If it's not labled PL I'd say no way.

Does the "PL" come directly after the numerical grade?

Just want to make sure that it's not a partial descrition
    for "planchet"......

If it is a 65PL, I'd say it's probably a good shot to take.

I've never seen a PL surface on on any MEL or
    doubled edge lettering error dollar....

I hate being the blind leading the blind.

    This time I was.

I got to eat me words.

I guess I have't seen enough MS nor SP sets, as some have come back PL and DMPL.

I'm with Fred, and to some extent a bit of what I said.

And if it really has a PL or DMPL designation on the label, then maybe consider it.

What I said that I'll stick with is that I'd want to see it in hand, or at least see a shot of the coin and label showing the designation.

  • Thanks guys, I will grab it this weekend. I can't wait to see the coin because I really can't imagine it looking like a proof, but then again that is why they call it proof LIKE.

  • I thought I had it, but when I went to buy it the seller backed out. I asked him how much he wanted and he said he didn't want to sell it at this time. At least he could have said some ridiculous number.
