New early quarter book first on topic since 1925!?!

TPRCTPRC Posts: 3,814 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just received my April 18, 2011 issue of Coin World. I usually receive my magazine late. A heading stated that the new quarter book is the first on the topic since 1925. I have the new quarter book. My preliminary review of it tells me that it is fantastic...a must have. But there is also a Tompkins book, which I also have and which also is very good, published in 2008. So...what am I missing?

Edited for multiple typos!

there's a new one that scooped the new new one by a couple of years. I have the new one but haven't seen the new new one yet, just the preview on the website.

Coin World sure blew it, by missing the Tompkins Bust Quarter book. Anyone with only a few Bust Quarters would certainly enjoy either, or both books. I do.

The book by Rea, Karoleff, Peterson, and Kovach is great. I have it on my desk right now... I have not bought the Tompkins book but have heard good things about it as well
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

Both books are great especially if you love early quarters.

I have both books. Here's an abbreviated view of the two:
Tompkins (2008)--nice production, glossy paper, color photos (including close-up views of areas critical to variety attribution), discussion of the history of bust quarter collecting, 'oddities', E & L counterstamps, master die hub changes, die linkage and re-marriage charts, a short bibliography, etc.
Rhea, Peterson, Karoleff, and Kovach (2010)--nice production, glossy paper, color photos (including close-ups), historical information interwoven throughout the text (more extensive than what's in Tompkins), E & L counterstamps, errors, counterfeits, short bibliography, etc. I really like the extensive pedigree information and the presentation of charts illustrating estimated condition census data by date and variety.

If your budget is limited to just one, get Rhea et al.; serious early federal silver addicts will want both.

I would think any serious bust quarter collector would want both.

really? Wow. Tells me a bit about the value of Coin World when that kind of misinformation can be published.

I have not seen this, as I don't subscribe to Coin World anymore. It does not surprise me that much, but I know that Coin World sent someone to several Bust Quarter meetings over the last few years and I know that my book was announced.

Anyone have a copy of the article so that I can send in a response?image I would appreciate it!

Sorry Quarternut, I can't help you with Coin World article, stopped my subscription about twenty years ago. Thought I would bring this thread to the top.
