How many super gems were destroyed.....

I guess circulated would be more fitting than destroyed. I wonder how many pre depression era coins that would be considered gem or higher today were put into circulation out of nescessity.
I can see this scenario unfolding time and time again in the 1930's; A nice gem Barber quarter get's used to buy some flour and eggs because a family is down to their last meal.
Obviosly a hypothetical, but I bet a great many gem Barbers, Mercs, Standing Quarters, and early Walkers were turned into AU pieces during this time.

<< <i>It can happen today if we don't keep a eye out. The wife took some change I had on the table and put it in the chang jar. I was looking all over then I asked her about it and she told me to look in the jar there it was. I gave her the x-ray stare and all she said was keep your crap off the table and walked away.
That's funny, I've recieved the same speech from my wife when an 1877 S Quarter ended up in the change jar.

HOLY CRAP BATMAN! Maybe a good reply would be... Maybe I should just keep the (______) away from my retirement savings/investments?
Looking for Top Pop Mercury Dime Varieties & High Grade Mercury Dime Toners.
I recall back in the 70's, 80's and even into the late 90's that a lot of dealers had a common practice
of dumping early common 60's rolls of nickels and pennys into there till's as well as sms stuff and on
i've wittnessed dealers cut up 1970 mint sets and dump all exept the half into there till, dealers treated
this as junk and sellers spent it because, why not, anyhow that common stuff may not be so common
in high grades.

<< <i>Along the same lines, many gold dollars with holes appear quite circulated. No doubt...plucked from a necklace at some point and pressed into service. A gold dollar represented a mans wage for a day during its period of use. >>
Most merchants refused to accept coins with holes.
They're worn because of constant abrasion incurred during use as jewelry.
