A new world has opened up to me...

I started watching "Pawn Stars" only a few months ago. They only occasionally show coins or paper money on there, but I still find it very interesting and often laugh out loud at some of the interaction between Rick, Chumlee, and the old man. Big Hoss isn't quite so funny.

Then, someone on this forum mentioned the "American Pickers" TV program and now I'm getting hooked on that one also. Then I started watching "Storage Wars" on a couple of channels, and although it's not my favorite, it's still fun to watch.

Next, I ran into another pawn type of TV show with two younger women wearing gray t-shirts running the store, but haven't seen that one again lately. I also saw a preview of a new "storage auction" type of show on the Spike channel one night, and that's supposed to start again in April I believe.

Last but not least, last night there was yet another pawn store TV program (on A&E I think) with an elderly woman and her daughter in a store near Chicago.

Does anyone else follow these collector related programs regularly? Have I missed mentioning any other good ones? Are there any primarily coin-related shows I've missed? image

Here's a pic just to keep this coin related:

Ever watch Hardcore Pawn? I believe much of it is fiction but the customer base are the purest definition of poor in mentality and bank account and a nice example that most people that are poor have behaviors that make them poor.

I'll fess up to watching and enjoying many of the shows you mention: Pawn Stars, American Pickers, and Storage Wars. These do a pretty good job of blending history and entertainment.

Sure beats "Real Housewives of XYZ".

Yeah, I must admit I love them all! But I've got into storage wars lately... I just can't stand Dave... yeeeeepppppppp!

  • Hi,

I don't watch them at all. Having seen an episode here or there, they and the "experts" generally have little to no idea what they are talking about and those shows are totally scripted IMHO anyway. Roadshow is equally off base a lot of the time. The $77,000 (or whatever it was...that figure was for a not genuine life-jacket I think) Titanic menu for example. Like the current violin - ridiculous and laughable if not so sad because it will sell.

    Best wishes,
    Eric

They are a little dorky, but I enjoy seeing all of the collectibles, etc. in those old buildings they pick through.

    Ok..that's just funny! image

Yes, I follow these shows and enjoy them for what they are. An advanced collector can see through a lot of the production stuff but still they entertain and you get to see unusual items. For me it beats the heck out of the other garbage typically on TV.

  • image Theres a forum i ran across where the big hoss guy post's , he take's an awful lot of flaming. It's the best of the lot i think , hard core pawn is harder to like the owners.I did see a new one last night about people call this company called "toomuchstuff4me" and they come and hold a sale right there in the house.
Last night's was either 100% a set up with planted items or the guy is the biggest fool on tv. One guy walked away with at least a dozen civil war era rifles , knifes and other civil war hardware for 3800..wtf..and apparantly the guy thinks he knows what he is doing. They reversed a truck over the ladies porcelin items. Some of the most amazing things under one roof was on that show, lincoln memorbilia,WWll ,Civil war , coins , diamonds , antiques , early gibson and other musical equipment , it was endless.
For sure it's about the dumbest way to empty a house i've ever seen.
  • Pawn Stars had one episode where a customer brought in a raw early gold coin. I don't remember the date. Rick had a coin "expert" come and look at it.
He said the coin was genuine and would probably grade at least MS 63. Ithink the coin booked at 40,000 in MS 63. Rick gave the guy 33,000 FOR A RAW COIN!
I was floored. He was nuts to pay that much for the coin before it was graded. Never heard if it graded or not. They seem to be very generous with coins and
    currency at the shop.

It's good, no brainer entertainment at the end of a long work day. Besides, who wants to watch Trump on the golf channel on Mondays? image

  • Apparantly , and i believe it to be true if a person were to visit the pawn shop in Vegas none of the people on the show are ever there. It's made specially for tv.

Those shows have screwed up a lot of things around where i live. Those shows are all scripted!!! That raw gold coin that broght 35k last year, lol...

Over the years i have done a lot of things to make a extra dollar from buying storage lockers to make pawn shop rounds. Last week i saw at least 50 people waiting to bid on some storage buildings. I used to pay 50 bucks, now they go nuts. I had a renter whose parents owned a storage business. I can tell you nothing of value was every sold. They cherry picked the goods. This was years ago and i would think it is even worse now. I am at a loss why anyone would really have a storage locker and why they would keep the good stuff there. I would venture to guess that 25 percent of my rents have them with the average value being less than they pay yearly for the thing.

It is entertainment TV at best, it is sad that people like Chummley have a loyal following. Same goes for the housewives, they are all just weeks away from being bankrupt or divorced or jailed. lol

    I agree.

I have a good friend here in Canada, whose brother for years bought the contents of storage units. He does complain now that there are about 5 times as many people bidding on them than before the TV show.

    It must hurt his business.

I sure hope they don't start a 'coin show pickers' seriesimage

Having been IN the coin and pawn bizz for decades, I can tell you that a LOT of those programs are pure bunk.
First, a customer who will WAIT for an EXPERT is rarer than a Brasher doubloon.
Second, I did pay high and especially LOAN high on coins. Hoping for a default. Lots of pawnshops don't know coins and when our association had conventions with ANA counterfeit seminars maybe TWO pawnbrokers would attend.
Knowing COINS in a pawnshop is a BIG advantage.

The shows must be scripted. MOST pawns are for pure junk. Maybe not in Vegas but in the real world.
Vegas and Reno pawnshops loan high because they SELL high. High rollers wanting to impress new floozies will pay through the nose.
LOCAL pawnshops sometimes pawn stuff at Nevada shops and toss the ticket. They do loan that high. OR.... I guess I should say ...DID.

The new ebay outlet has allowed locals to get higher prices for cameras and stuff like that.

It appears the BEST deals are gotten by the picker show guys. You can make a real SCORE on "junk."

Yeah, and they fail to mention the 20%-25% seller's juice.
The real auction is his father's shop-Red Baron Auction.

I find it hard also to believe all those treasures they find in storage. If I were the owners of these storage units I sure would not be auctioning off to the public.
  • Type2Type2 Posts: 13,985 ✭✭✭✭✭
The way the law is they need to auction it off they can't keep it. The $$$ go to the bill for the storage room and the balance gos back to the owner of the locker but they need to ask for it. If they don't ask for it they keep it. I find alot of items but it some Gold some Silver the list go's on the key to this game is just sit back and look if you see some thing that looks good your in the $$ set a limit and dont go over. But you do find alot of yard sale and Auction items that sell for good $$$ give it a try you just might like it. Be a looker 1st then a buyer 2nd take a flash light you will need it. image

As for the owners of the items some time they pass and no one knows they have the locker
and some times they just cant pay for the locker they try to work with them but it sell most of the time. the room / locker can have grandpa's gold bar's but they dont know and think it's just grandpa's old junk so they dont pay the bill and it go to auction and some one finds it. Jackpot image

I've noticed that but always wonder who provides the padlocks those guys use to "re-lock" the room once they win it? I always see them putting a new padlock back on the locker door once the auction is over.

Storage wars is entertaining, but is obviously very scripted/pre-planned for TV (just like Am. Pickers and Pawn Stars shows). Are all the other people standing around actual bidders or just paid "extras" to make it appear real, since the only ones televised are those four main characters? image

    P.S. Great pix, Type 2!
