VAM question

CoinCrazyPACoinCrazyPA Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭✭
I picked up a 1887-S PCGS 63 in an auction, I knew it was a Vam 4 just from the auction photos but I could not see the S in states on the back clearly enough to see if it had the S was doubled. When I received it I looked at the back back sure enough it was. So it turns out I have have a Vam-11 non attributed on the holder. Is this coin in enough collector demand to send it in and get the coin attributed, or is it a waste of money? any thoughts would be great. I searched Google and could not find one auction or anyone selling an MS example.

The VAM 11 has a higher R ranking than VAM 4 by LVA, but in this instance, I don't think there is much market difference between VAM 4 and VAM 11, unless there are at least two HOT 50 set collectors that can't live without the VAM 11.

It doesn't look like PCGS attributes the VAM11. They will the 4

I tought all Hot 50 were graded except for some 1921's lumped together. Maybe no one has sent one it? i don't know, i will have to investigate that now. Thanks

Edit: In coin facts they only go up to Vam-8?

Unless the '87-S VAM 11 is a very recent revision/addition to the HOT 50 set, it should be attributable by PCGS.

According to the on-line Pop Report just now, PCGS currently only recognizes VAM 2 (S over S) and 4 (Doubled Date) for 1887-S.
    When in doubt, don't.

Does anyone here have a 1887-S Vam 11 or seen one for sale. I cannot find one any where on the web. Or is there just no interest in this variety? Also does anyone think PCGS would recognize the variety if sent in as such? Any thought would be greatly appreciated. Mike

Since they haven't recognized it yet... even though it's a recent addition to the Hot 50... it either means they would not do it, or they would call it a VAM 4. If it were my coin I would call PCGS, ask for Mike Faraone, and see what he says. He's the guy who attributes/verifies all VAMs at PCGS.
    When in doubt, don't.
